Title: Bio-Oil
Post by: Amy :-) on August 05, 2012, 10:33:15 am
I have heard that this stuff is really good. Does anyone use it or know somebody else who uses it? I have done some research on the internet but was hoping someone on here might be willing to share their experiences :)

I just want to know if it is worth the money.

Thanks in advance :)

Amy, what do you want to use it for?

From memory, it is mostly petroleum oil?  My experience is that it is a good moisturiser but doesnt do any of the magical things they claim.

I have some scars I was hoping it could improve. I heard it can do that ???

It's made of lots of things I can't pronounce. I read the box when I was in the chemist and don't remember seeing petroleum on there. I thought it was Pawpaw ointment that was made of petroleum?

Amy
My mother uses this and thinks it's very worthwhile. I agree that I don't think that it has petrolatum in it. I don't think that pawpaw ointment has it either - but Vaseline does!
HTH!

One of the best things for scars is sunlight in small daily doses.

How much sunlight is enough Hally? I have very sensitive skin and usually start to burn within 5 minutes.

The main ingedient i think is Paraffinum Liquidum which is Mineral Oil derived from petroleum.  An example of confusing labelling.

I'm not knocking it on that base - i use vaseline for my cuticles and as a handcream - but i don't know if there is any scientific evidence that it is going to reduce scarring.

Amy, have you spoken to your Dr about creams that can reduce scarring?

I think 5 mins max per day woukd be enough, with sun block on.
I was told this by a plastic suregon.

Amy, have you spoken to your Dr about creams that can reduce scarring?

Yes I have Snappy, and I've tried 2 different types which both gave me eczema :-\
I was hoping this Bio-Oil might be some sort of natural product that wouldn't irritate my skin.

Thanks Hally, I will try this when the sun decides to come out! :-))

Oh you poor thing Dublin Girl!!! :o At least the spinal surgery I had was in my lower back, so my shirt covers my scar :-\

I wish you all the best for the surgery. Do you mind me asking which state you are in?

Give it a go Amy, this guy is very good. A few years ago an Essendon player  james Hird, had his face put out of place whilst here. There were 3 plastic surgeons working on him & this guy was one of them.

I like bio oil and just buy it from coles or woolies. There is an alternate brand (the name just doesn't come to mind) that is slightly cheaper and does the same job. I only use as a moisturiser though and not for scars etc.

Doris Day only ever used vaseline on her skin.

Hi Amy
I suffer from keloid scarring so when I had surgery two years ago the plastic surgeon advised silicone gel bandages.
I wore these six weeks after surgery (I think it was six) all day and night for about 8 weeks (can't remember exactly)
The scarring is still there but not as bad as my other scars.  These scars did not go red and swell up like the others and even today the scars are not too visible.
I purchased my bandages online. (not cheap)
Apparently these bandages are used on burns with great results.
Good luck

Rara x

Nope ;D I was just asking who she was when you posted Judy!! :-))

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I'll look into these things further (and get some sunshine ;)) before I go spending that much money on the Bio-Oil :) :)

It's amazing what some teenagers like, depends what they have been exposed to. DD watched old movies with us - "Please don't eat the Daisies" and "With 6 you get Eggroll" are amoungst her favourites.

Its just because I don't watch many movies DFM. I love old music like Queen, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Elton John. And I love old family time games like scrabble and snakes and ladders ;D
But I'm just not a TV person ;)

My DS had success with Bio Oil on a large scar on his arm but we started using it as soon as possible after surgery on advice from his surgeon. You only need a tiny amount so the small bottle lasts quite a while.

Do you have a chemist warehouse in WA?  If so, they usually have bio oil on sale quite regularly or 2 for 1 deals.  A little bit goes a long way.

I used bio-oil on the advice of my DD's FIL who is a natura path after I was burned on my face and chest trying to get bolognaise sauce that I had been reheating, from microwave which was above my head height. I had to wear compression bandages and was told my chest area would be badly scarred. I used the oil faithfully and absolutely no scarring at all. The sauce went right down into my bra and on one side of my face. Ouch!!!! That was almost 7 years ago and i now have microwave at bench level. I would highly recommend this oil as even my doctor was amazed that I had no scarring.

Yes, I do know that song DFM! :D I don't think I've heard the original though. I'll look it up on Youtube ;)

MF, that sounds like a horrible accident! :o It must have been very painful :(

Thanks for your comments girls, I will look up chemist warehouses in WA and see what I can find :)

Thanks Amy - I'm in Melbourne - I had a thoracic disc prolapse about 15 years ago - now that's a big scar but on my back so hidden!  I'll talk to neurosurgeon and see what he recommends for my new scar.

Sounds like you've had some painful injuries Dublin Girl :( Do you mind me asking what caused them? Mine was caused by a heavy lifting accident.
I really hope your surgery in September goes well :-*

Just adding my 2c worth. Mineral Oil is an excellent occlusive agent. It prevents anything getting in or out.
It works by keeping moisture in. It helps prevent bacteria etc from getting in to wounds too.

It's dirt cheap. That's my only complaint. Companies such as the one that makes Bio Oil shouldn't be charging so much.

I have a product which is relatively expensive (for my product range) called Rosehip Recovery Serum. It
contains only pure plant oils, silicone and loads of Vitamin A and E. way, way more than the big companies use.

I've had excellent feedback from customers on the effectiveness of this serum for softening and smoothing skin. I haven't recommended it for scarring but due to the high levels of Vit E and A it should work a treat.

Well my thoracic disc prolapse just happened........ Woke up one night with terrible chest pain initially the neurologist  thought I had myelitis then a tumour as I have a large cyst on the spine too - filnally the prolapse was diagnosed and I had surgery - ended up been in hospital for 6 weeks as I managed to catch golden staph ! A terrible time with a 3 year old 15 month old and our house up for auction!!!! ! Anyway we survived. I have ongoing pain with back and I have osteoarthritis in hip and knee - had hip surgery in March for labral repair and cam impingement - hasn't really settled down so I am having PRP next Monday on my hip and knee(having my own bone marrow injected into hip and knee joint to help recovery/repair (fingers crossed it helps) !

Hi
CC's daughter here. For scars, I recommend either vitamin E or Bio-oil to my patients post hip or knee replacement.
If you buy a bottle of vitamin E capsules, prick one with a pin and squeeze the contents out, then massage the scar and the skin around it for a couple of minutes. Ditto with the bio-oil. Try and massage along thr length of the scar and across it like railway sleepers.
Best time is post shower or bath when the skin is warm and slightly damp. Minimum once per day but twice is better if you have the time. If the scar is particularly sensitive, then you could ask someone who loves you & doesn't mind being healthily sworn at to do it for you.
Scars can take up to a year to remodel, so results might be slow. Persevere though, it should help.

Just thinking, I saw a photo of a lady on the web about a month ago, and her skin was amazing.

Her trick was a tablespoon of oil in her bath every day, and soaked.

I find my massage oil so good for my skin.  I use Sweet Almond Oil.

I wouldn't recommend using oil in the bath. It can be really dangerous as far as slipping goes.

Another point about products like Bio Oil that are made from petroleum is that as an occlusive agent, mineral oil cannot carry anything through the skins upper layer. Only plant oils can do this as the molecules are so much smaller.

A great way of getting super soft skin is to use the oil cleansing method, or OCM. look it up and you'll see its easy to make your own concoction.
