Title: New Oven suggestions
Post by: Shazzy on September 09, 2012, 01:35:24 pm
Hi It looks like I am going to have to replace my oven and have been looking around over the weekend but am getting very confused.  Have looked at Neff, Miele and Bosch mostly and seem to change my mind between the 3!!!! I would appreciate any advice particulary if anyone has one of these brands. Thanks

Hi Shazzy. I would thoroughly recommend Miele I have two ovens conventional and microwave convection grill combo and the plate warmer all fantastic. Very easy to keep clean. Good luck oven shopping!

If the budget allows try and get pyrolitic cleaning function.
You still have to clean the racks by hand but don't have to tackle the walls, floor or ceiling of the oven.

I have an Ilve Quadra free standing and do not recommend it. The oven doesn't cook evenly and have had repeated problems with it in the 3 years that I have had it. Wish I had bought Miele   :-[

I have an Ariston which I am happy with it has the pyrolitic cleaning, it was also bigger inside than a lot of the ovens we looked at. We had a built in oven 90cm I think and the ariston was by far the biggest (I would have loved a bigger oven) it also has dual temperature function so you could use the top of your oven at 120 degrees and the bottom at 180 or whatever you want

Had have had Ilve service guys out consistently since it was installed 3 years ago. Gas hoplates cut out frequently especially when using Le Creuset. They told me not enough airflow due to pot size!!  Drives me insane as you think everything is cooking then you find that one hotplate has cut out. Not good when co-ordinating a meal and want everything ready at same time. Only one that doesn't cut out is simmer plate. :-))
They refuse to replace it and also say could be the gas supply that is inconsistent !

That must be so frustrating Mama Fergie I have separate hot plates but would love a bigger oven but we had to stick to the same size as the cutout otherwise it would have cost too much more to do up the kitchen

hi everyone, I too am in the market for a new oven, I'm going to get a new kitchen.  I've heard it is good to have a function to turn off the fan does anyone have anything to say about this.  I don't have a clue what to look for my old westinghouse is 25 years old with a separate grill underneath that I now never use.  It has a rotisserie that I have used once so I don't think I want anything too fancy.

I love our new Neff oven - we ordered from Europe cause it was much less than half price even with duty, taxes and shipping and it arrived in less than a month. After checking a number of forums the Aussie service folk aren't the best and there are a number of individual contractors who will service it for us.

The best part is the retractable door  :)  No more worrying about burning an arm when lifting something heavy in or out, this and the internal size being large enough for a proper roast sold me on it.

I have had Neff oven in a precious house and thought it was very good. Well known in Europe but less well known here.

You got lucky  with your  Ariston. When I bought this house it had an Ariston oven and dishwasher. I replace both as soon as I was able. The dishwasher was a disaster  and the fan on the Ariston was so loud we could not watch the TV when it was on and you could not turn the fan off.

This was 10 years ago. After the fourth time I had to call the repair guy he said never use the Finish Thingies and to use no more than a teaspoon of  stuff and never never use rinse aide in it. The fifth time I drew the line and tossed it. It was still under warranty but I didn't care.

I liked the pizza setting on the oven but the NOISE!! I replaced it with a cheapo Euromaid which is just fine and sooooo quiet and you can turn the fan off.

I like the idea of the Neff with the slide away door.

I don't use rinse aid and I don't overload it with powder, the fan stays on for quite a while after you turn if off though now that you have said that

Try and get a an oven where you can turn the fan off.
My Electrolux has 10 functions but I only use about 2 or 3 of them. It seems to run a bit on the cool side too, I always up the temp.

I was just about ready to buy a new oven (nothing wrong with the old one, but it doesn't like me), but then bout a tmx instead! Anyhoo, there are some models that have thinner insulation than others which means that they have a larger capacity even though they are the same dimensions outside (I hope that makes sense)...just another point to consider.
And IMO the pyrolitic cleaning function is worth every cent!

Shazzy, some of the oven brands have free cooking classes which showcase their ovens.  I went to one for my Smeg and that was great.  You can ask lots of questions and mine went for 2 hours and we ate everything that was cooked.  I am happy with my Smeg, but because it was freestanding, couldn't get the self cleaning which I would have loved.

Thanks everyone for your replies - it has been interesting reading.  I have oscillated between the 3 I mentioned. I love the Miele that I looked at (and my hubby said that I could have!!) especially the new steam part as I have been making my own bread but to go to the pyrolitic one its nearly $1000 more which is just too much.  I can get a Bosch pyrolitic oven on special at the moment for just under the $2000 and I guess I just can put a bowl of water in when doing bread! Kezza great idea about the cooking class - I know that neff does one and I am planning to see if I can get into the one this Wednesday. I have also read that there are issues though with after sales service on the Neff so will follow that up further with them on Wednesday.
Need to make a decision soon as my oven is terrible. Made some little pasties this arvo that were a disaster especially the black bottoms!! its just too depressing to cook!
Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

Just updating - I have ordered a Bosch oven and my lovely husband has also agreed to let me order an inbuilt combination oven/microwanve - also Bosch. Im so excited. Only problem is getting the guy to quote on putting the ovens in!! I have been without an oven now for over 2 weeks and feel frustrated not being able to bake especially reading everthing everyone is posting. Thanks again for all the advice given.

Have a St. george  double oven.  One of the reasons I chose it is that it has a side opening door.  This means you don't have to reach over the door to place/ remove things from oven.

Hi Shazzy,
You will be happy with the Bosch, my sister is very happy with hers. I have a double Neff, actually a one and a half and have been very happy with it. The smaller of the two is good when you bake just one cake or one loaf of bread. It has many good features. I like the handles of the Neff that turn with your hand when you open the oven which is very comfortable to use  :)

Thanks everyone. Didnt actually start cooking til about 4 yesterday. I had wanted the first thing to be a sourdough loaf but unfortunately having problems getting my starter to activate!! Anyway did a chicken roast and couldnt beleive how quickly and how well it was cooked. Also while that was cooking cooked some bikkies in the new comb Micro/oven which turned out beautifully.  I cant beleive that I have been so fortunate to have 2 ovens now!! I feel very spoilt.  Yes JD I am a bit babmoozled by all the switches and the trays ect but hopefully over time will manage to work it all out.  McMich I have no idea how to do anything with photos - I cant even work out how to get them off my phone or camera and print them!! I unfortunately dont have a technical brain in the slightest!!  Hopefully ES you may be able to get a new oven soon. I hated it when I spent all the time preparing something to cook and then it would fail because of the oven (well thats what I blamed it on anyway!!).

Bedlam, BZB, Hally (and everyone else) ... I am starting to look for cookers (once I have convinced DH that we need one) and Miele certainly seems to be one of the front runners at the moment (I hadn't thought of Siemens, BZB).  Whilst you were researching for your ovens, did you consider "all in one" oven / cooktop units and, if so, what are your thoughts?  I am just about ready to toss my cooker out as it is driving me mad and am now on the search for a good replacement but it has to be a single unit, not two separate units.  Any thoughts / ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

We have just renovated our kitchen.
We have put in Siemens ovens and induction cooktop.
So far so good except Siemens in Adelaide doesn't have any support or cooking demonstrations.
This means trying to figure out how the ovens (including steam oven) has been difficult.
In all my research I felt the Miele were smaller and quite a bit more expensive.
Hope this helps

I knew Miele were more expensive, I didn't realise that they were smaller, though I am tight for size so maybe not a problem for me (I literally only started thinking seriously about this yesterday so haven't done a great deal of research).  Thanks for your feedback, I will try to get a better look at the Siemens site later today.  I have a feeling there is actually a separate thread about this on here somewhere, but couldn't find it, so perhaps I will get a couple more answers on here.

We have Bosch oven/induction hob. Partly because DH used to work there (with alarms, not ovens, but still made us more aware of the brand) but also because we heard they have very good after sales service. Friends had a cooktop that died after 4 years and it was replaced quickly, with no hassles.

Speaking of replacements, Hills have just replaced another clothesline for us! They are just great - will never buy any other brand now. Not that it's a frequent thing to buy, but I am very impressed. It's at our rental and a serviceman will go and swap them over and all!

Cuilidh, siemens is a very good German brand. It is the big brother of Bosch. More premium line, but not as expensive as miele. We bought a siemens dishwasher and it's brilliant. Quiet, flexible organisation, has cutlery tray AND basket.

Planning to buy their  hood and pyrolytic oven when we renovate.

I am finding myself in the same place as when I  kept researching the thermomix.  I am trying to work out if Miele are as good as popular belief.  I have a blanco 90cm at the moment, not impressed as I don't get an even bake. My last was an all in one huge la germania electric oven and gas hot plate.  That took a long time to heat up and also not an even bake.  I am determined to get something reasonable this time.
We are going to a "Miele experience" on Saturday and I will have a bit better idea of my needs then.  Certainly I don't need a computerised automatic oven ( apple pie, golden, set and away it goes type oven).
Bee I haven't looked at Siemens and haven't heard anything about them but will do now.
We are in a good position as have plenty of time.  Our builder uses Smeg.
I will update as I research.
Feel blessed to have the input of all the forumites as we all enjoy cooking and are probably expect great things from our ovens.

Denise, Jo's Miele has a setting which can heat the oven more quickly than normal if you're in a hurry.  Put that on your list of questions for the Miele evening ;)  My Miele cooks evenly, I think you will find that is a plus for them.

Denise, I recall researching smeg years ago (when I started daydreaming about a new kitchen 😁). Not good reviews.

For me, my must haves are:
- German technology
- pyrolytic
- good lighting
- fast to heat up
- as much space as possible within the 600 mm box
- slide out racks
- minimum triple glazed doors
- not over the top expensive

😄😃

Our first house had Blanco, shocking oven.

i love my miele and wouldn't want any other oven. It cooks evenly, has rapid heat up, I rarely turn the oven on before I start preparing food. Switch it on at the last minute and its ready to go very quickly even without using the rapid heat up. I can cook a lot of food at once, occasionally I wish I had another oven to cook food at different temps etc, but thats on a rare occasion.

It has all the programmes to cook food to perfection, I haven't used them, unless I am cooking meat with the probe, use that all the time.

Let us know how you go.

I would reccomend anyone thinking of purchasing a miele oven to attend the "miele experience".  It cost $25 for two people to attend.  On arrival a coffee was prepared for us and served with a yummy macaron.  We were then ushered into the demonstration.  Firstly, a dough that had been proving in a warming drawer was shaped and then placed into the top of the range oven. She programmed for a white loaf with a golden crust and switched it on. The oven does the second proof and then bakes.  It came out perfect. Next she demonstrated the steam oven ( this seemed to dominate in the demo and actually confirmed my opinion) a tray of prawns already to serve on spoons was cooked for 4 min @ 100c , these were passed around, very tasty.  Another oven had the automatic program  set with a pork belly, this also came out looking good and was melt in the mouth delicious. A huge beef fillet was cooked using the internal meat thermometer, this wasnt the top of the range oven which has a wireless thermometer but one that plugs in to the side wall.  Once again perfect. She demonstarted how to use the steam ovens ability to cook using all four trays, steaming rice, eggs, salmon and leeks, also she had prepared earlier a vege stock ( it comes out beautiful and clear from no agitation when steaming) this was used for a leek risotto, also cooked in the steam oven.  Merangue baskets were cooked in the warming drawer and a berry compote demonstated the induction cooktop together with melting chocolate in frypan.
After the demonstration we all enjoyed a smorgasboard of the wares.
I had wanted to see the speed oven demonstrated (multi wattage microwave and convection oven smaller than the 60cm oven) this wasn't demonstrated at all and she suggested attending a different class aimed at after the purchase for more knowlege on this item. These classes are free.
I thought we would purchase a speed oven, a fourth from the top of the range 60 cm oven and a warming drawer prior to attending the class. I now think a warming drawer unnecessary as the ovens range from 30c to 300c and will probabaly get two ovens one with the programmed recipes and extra features and once more basic.
I think that after all the reports and comments I would regret not spending the extra and getting a miele oven, although I am sure many would be as good.  My luck would be that mine wasn't and i would always think I should have bought the Miele.
Regarding Steam ovens, just my personal opinion, I hate how drippy they are, obvious I know and she had a towel ready to wipe the bottom of the tray as it came out of the oven. Easy but I would find and do find with my smalll sharp microwave steam oven, it annoying.  I also would like all the steam released into my kitchen and wonder if it would encourage mould.
I hope miele after purchase service is as good as their sales pitch as everything was done to a very high standard.  I expected a follow up hard sell phone call and so far this hasn't occured.
I am not sure I have helped anyone with my review however I would encourage anyone interested after finding out the price of your desired oven to attend the experience.

Thanks for the review, Denise, I was really looking forward to hearing how your 'experience' went and it all sounds very encouraging.  I will have to take a good look at their range now and see what will work at our place and what won't as we don't have unlimited space or resources.

It was interesting to read your comments re. the steam oven.  I suspect it is something I would not get a lot of use out of, except for bread.  Overall, do you think it is worth going for a steam option (remember that I only cook vegetarian / vegan), would it be worth the purchase expense just to steam eggs, etc occasionally?  I would love to hear your opinion - or everyone else's opinion who has a steam oven.

Marina,
I love the look of the shot of steam function in their oven range. You can set it to release automatically or manually.  I am sure steamed food is tasty and  good for you I just can't cope with all the water and drips. We also have the varoma and it does most things I would do in a steam oven just not big quantities.
I am also sure there are many great brands of oven out there. I don't want anyone to think I am pushing Miele, I would recommend having a very nice meal and a couple of hours looking at their product.

So we are still without an oven which is rather putting a dent in my cooking repertoire. We went into Harvey Norman last weekend and were annoyed by a salesperson who you could tell just wanted to close the sale and had no idea about baking and the ovens. I called in quickly on the Monday hoping he wouldn't be there. But no he came straight over. Urgh! I am thinking Miele and budget was originally about $2500 so was thinking the pyroletic. But DH said to me tonight you spent 2k on the Tmx surely we can spend more on the oven lol. Got to love him. But seriously I have no idea on the differences between the ovens. There is a thread on whirlpool where people have imported them and saved 50% maybe I'll get to another store Monday.

An update. I was almost ready to buy a Smeg 75cm oven when I started searching smeg reviews. No end of hassle. So I'm totally scared of them now. I do not want to be paying for parts at 2yrs and 1 day old.

Miele are too small internally. Which is a real deal breaker.

I'm sold on the scholtes. Not a lot of info available on them. But  large inside, 3 telescopic rails, rotisserie, Pizza stone and paddle, 5 yr warranty. But the big one... Oven can be divided in two. Can cook sweet in top, roast in bottom. Different temps and no cross flavouring. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-hD4ZyKgQI4

Fantastic! It's exciting shopping isn't it. Are you also going to look at the Scholtes?

Someone also suggested the Asko Ichef to me. But again only two reviews and both were bad to start one was corrected. It has a touch screen. But the thing that turned me off is 2yr warranty. Was also told to look at AEG they have a 5yr warranty like scholtes. Really thinking we will go scholtes though.

Well after two very frustrating days looking at ovens (yes my oven died at the weekend)  I now have to wait 2 weeks to get a replacement oven.  Apparently the stores don't stock Miele ovens.  The area where the oven has to go limits what we get but now the decision has been made, oven paid for, now have to wait.  Silly me thought it would be as simple as picking a model of oven, contacting store and going and getting it or just waiting a few days.   No, not that easy.  Staff at the stores have no idea what they are selling, spent two very frustrating days trying to find out about the electrical fitting of the said oven, we were  given incorrect information.  In the last 12 years when every appliance in the house was new we have had to replace 7 of them.  For those that are building, be prepared to replace any built in appliances in the future.

Good news that you have bought a new oven Marie  ;D It must be frustrating not being able to bake.

How frustrating Marie.  I have decided on Miele also.  I have been amazed that after the fantastic demo nobody has phoned with the hard sell.  I certainly expected some pressure.  I will have plenty of time on my side, unfortunately!

CC, it is terribly frustrating not having an oven, but I am glad the decision has now been made.  Just have to wait  ???

Bedlam, good luck with yours.  I feel after the last two days that because Miele have a set price nationwide and only discount when they choose or if you are ordering two or three of their products there is no real effort put in to selling by the sales staff at store level.  The money has to be paid direct to Miele before they will ship and the frustrating part is how long it takes to arrive at the store. In other words, if you want a Miele, you wait for it.   They won't ship direct to a residential address and that alone will cost us another week.   The store staff have virtually no product knowledge.  It ended up the Miele was the only one that fitted in the cavity as in the 12 years since the house was built the sizes and regulations have changed  and we don't want to have to change the kitchen.  Too old for that, this one has to see me out.  All the best with yours.

One thing my father in law has warned me about is the total wattage the ovens pull if pyroletic. He has had customers have to pay a restocking fee and return the oven unless they rewire their house to cope with the additional load.

I did a ring around today to investigate warranty/ repairs on the Scholtes. Our local repairer had never heard of them and the warranty lady said it would be .004% return. Going to check it out again this weekend.

Very good point.  I continue to be unsure about which model I will go for as I think, due to space, I may still have to go to a free standing cooker, which is disappointing, but that's just the way of it, we can't always have what we want :(  :(

I have had my pyroletic oven it is a Siemens and it is great for just a year now, but does anyone else find that they look dirty quicker than the normal oven and they say don't clean thenpm manually as it takes off the coating, you can't even wipe them clean as I did try and it is stuck on firm and I don't want to put on the auto cleaning too often , I don't know if I would bother with one again you still have to clean the racks by hand.

That is very good advice and will save people a lot of problems.   We found after we selected the model it was best to find the instruction manual for it online then read what was required re fitting/installation.  That will give you the kw (convert to amps for the wiring)  the oven will pull  and the clearances required.  The pyroletic model equivalent to the one we are getting does require more kw and maybe more clearance.  We would have certainly had to re-wire had we gone down that track with the self cleaning oven.

I'm in love! Cooked quirky's Paleo bread and it cooked in the minimum time noted. That never happens! And then tonight I cooked KFC chicken and used only the top section of the oven with divider in. No heat transfer! Tomorrow night duck on the rotisserie :)

Used the rotisserie tonight. It was great. Making me wonder what I can cook next on it. Looking forward to trying the auto roast function too.

Have used just the small function of the oven as well. It's great for fast cooking. Looking forward to trying it out as a pizza oven next weekend.

I've just looked through all these posts as we have decided to get a new oven. We will be limited in what we can look at with the size that is available as ours is all built in.
I initially thought a Miele steam oven, but do they need water piped to the oven for the steam?  I will look online tonight and go out looking tomorrow.
Any help or suggestions gratefully received thanks.

Cookie, DIL wanted a steam oven in their renovated kitchen. Looked at the Miele but decided that there might be a problem with the water. Can't remember what the issue was , but went for a different brand of steam oven. I think it is called a combination oven. She loves it. She is a very good cook and does lots of baking. Will find out the brand , if you are interested.
She did several cooking classes with Miele and said they were very helpful.

Thanks Chookie I would love to know what brand DIL's oven is please. Personal recommendations are so much better than trying to guess. I looked at heaps online last night and got rather confused. DH keeps finding some for under $500, fortunately I know he is tormenting me. Typical of him. 😃😃😃😃😃

Just a tip - re cleaning oven racks ..... put em through the dishwasher ;)
Takes most of the grime off, and what doesn't come off during the wash cycle is loosened and easy to wipe off :D
I put mine through each friday night as a routine thing - keeps them wonderfully shiny and still looking new after 6 years :)

Astarra, excellent tip. I do this as well as the bits on the gas hob.
Cookie, I spoke to Wendy, who you probably met at the AA cooking class.
Her oven is a Vzug, Swiss made. She put 2 in. They are combination ovens and the steam is excellent for bread.
She said that it is important to have one that injects steam into oven.  You can have it plumbed in but she chose not to and it has a well that you fill, not very often.
She said that since she bought hers that there are a lot more around.
Wendy also said that the most important thing you can do is to go to lots of cooking classes so you can compare. She said it is easy to get carried away with a good demonstrator but poor oven.
Hope this helps.

My SIL bought AEG ovens Cookie. One is a steam oven, not plumbed in but you put a "wet sponge" somewhere to produce the steam.Have you thought of having a "proving draw" as well?

Thank you so much for that Chookie. We have been out looking all day. I was tossing up between the Miele and the Neff. We came home for lunch and did a lot of research and it didn't really help. The Neff was amazing. However I eventually came to the conclusion that I wouldn't use all of the million functions so we went out to Miele and bought a Miele. It has a steam function that will inject steam into the oven cavity. This is all I really wanted as I have the AF etc and will use the oven mainly for baking. It has lots of functions and the best part of all is that it is being delivered this Wednesday.
I had read that some people had had service problems with the Neff so that is what swayed me. Very easy to spend several thousand dollars when you aren't even trying. Our air con went the other day, we are wondering what will be next.

Thanks again Chookie.

Denise this oven has a proving cycle in it. Rather handy for the winter. The steam isn't plumbed in, you hold a glass of water up to a straw like thing and it sucks the water up. Then it injects it into the oven as steam.

It's a hard decision, Cookie, because there are so many options and choosing the combination that is going to work best for you can be fraught with doubt.  Personally, I am a Miele fan so I am delighted you went with them - you are going to love it!

Cookie, good choice. Miele was Wendy's second choice. I have to say that with the Mieli appliances at Invermay, I am really impressed at the quality. The servicing of them has also been very good.
