Title: How do you put back together a Chinaman you've run over?

My eldest son had a big tumble off his brand new BMX on Saturday, knocked himself out for 2+ minutes, then at the insistence of his mates, got up and road for 4 km, then walked 1km. When we went to pick him up, it was obvious he was in a lot of pain, showed me his ankle, I got DH to drop us both up to the local hospital where he was immobilised on the bed with towels holding his neck stable. A Xray was taken and it was found that he has broken his tibea with a piece of floating bone off the inner ankle.

Due to a bump on it yesterday, we took him to the next bigger hospital where his neck is still tender and he is now in a hard collar until a MRI today clears (or not) his neck today, with a new back slab on his ankle, with a wait and see approach on his ankle waiting for the bone piece to relocate where it should be, or he will need surgery next week to screw that back into place. :'( :'( :'(

Hope they get a good talking to so there won't be a repeat performance next time one of their friends has a mishap!! Boys, what can you say.

Buy him a new one fruity. If he hit his head hard enough to lose conciseness with a helmet on then that one is toast.

I hope his leg fixes itself without surgery.

All the best, hope the MRI is all clear and the bone floats back to where it came.

I hope his neck is ok and I hope his ankle heals well. My DH snapped his ankle a couple of years ago, pins plates, plaster and crutches for a while but healed well and the pins came out a year later and touch wood, no problems.

Keep us updated as to his condition and yes buy him a new helmet, they are designed to take just one big thump.

Post by: ~[fruity]~ on November 12, 2012, 11:27:40 am: Thank you everyone, this was on a PUSH bike, not a motor bike, and DH checked his helmet, said it's fine, only a few scratches, I said no way another new helmet is required before he rides again.

GOod news, MRI came back clear, no neck damage. Now a waiting game one the ankle bone.

We have a week of no weight bearing and elevation as well as immobilisation to try and see if the piece of floating bone relocates to the correct spot, if not he will have surgery next week to screw it back in place.

He is bored out of his brain already. Usually such an active go getter and have to sit.... sit.... sit.

My toe, meh, same ole same ole, go to the next specialist in a fortnight ish

Post by: ~[fruity]~ on November 28, 2012, 06:49:30 am: Thanks astarra, he is in a full cast, bones in alignment 95% review xray in a fortnight and hopefully he will avoid surgery, I'm off to Ballarat tomorrow to see the big wig piggly wiggly (this little pig.....) doc tomorrow.
