Title: Hi there
Post by: cowley on February 02, 2013, 02:36:41 pm
Hi there I am new to thermomix. My friend has been talking about it for months and when she decided to buy one I went to her demo and I decided to get one as well. Being an experienced demonstrator, I am going to pay for mine by signing up as a demonstrator. I just hope I can sell enough in two months to pay for mine. Feeling a bit nervous about that. I do have one person lined up already.

I am so glad I found this site as I found the recipes section on the thermomix site not very user friendly and I like how it is set up here. Plus the tips and tricks section will be useful. Maybe I need to play around a bit more on there to get the hang of it.

Anyway, I am in Canberra with a hubby and two teenagers who are always hungry so hopefully the tm will inspire me to cook and bake a bit more for them. I can't wait til I get it. I am paying for it Wednesday so I am not sure how long it will take.

Hi Cowley, and welcome to the forum. Your teenagers might even be interested in making a few things themselves once they see how easy it is to use the TM.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.

I love what CP has done with that thread. I will certainly be using it! And yes I should teach my teenage boys how to use it. I bet they will be making lots of sorbets and ice cream. lol If they press the wrong buttons can they damage it? Is there anything to look out for? With them using it?

By the time you get it you will have an awful lot of recipes bookmarked to try cowley! ;D

In regards to your teenagers using your machine, I would just keep a very close eye on them. Don't let them do anything you hadn't already done until you all become confident with the machine. If you're unsure about any particulars, come on here and ask us ;)
Remember not to overload the bowl. Don't use the butterfly above speed three. Make sure you watch the machine if you are kneading stiff dough (they can take a walk off the bench if you're not careful :o). Don't remove the MC if you're mixing something on high speed (especially if its hot or spicy), it could flick out into your eye.

Thats just a few tips that come to mind :)

Hi and welcome cowley. I do love Floriade over there.
Back to the thermomix. I would let your sons use it. I would just ask them to remain with the machine when they do sorbets or  milkshakes etc. They only take a jiff to  make so it will be no trouble. They probably won't be using the butterfly initially.
What sort of things do you enjoy cooking? The wait is horrid, but use it to get the housework done, washing and ironing up to date and ingredients bought for your new recipes in the thermomix. You are about to have lots of fun.

ty. My sons are nagging me to bake more so I guess I may be inspired. I hate baking usually.

I try very hard to eat preservative free so I am mainly looking for fresh recipes with fresh veges. Really looking forward to that.
I have been thinking of buying an ice cream maker- don't have to now.

DH wanted a mincer cos he wins a lot of meat trays and would like to mince up the round steak. Don't have to buy that now.

I absolutely love Mediterranean style food.  Don't really eat it a lot but would like to get more into it. The cardiologist says I need to cut down on carbs and thats really not that easy so I was thinking if I could explore Mediterranean recipes more.
Does TM have a mediterranian recipe book? Greek?

Here's (http://www.recipecommunity.com.au/regional/european/greek?order=title&sort=asc) a few Greek recipes for you cowley.

The boys can't get into too much trouble pressing buttons if they are following a recipe and do exactly what the recipe says.  You all have to become familiar with it first though - baby steps until then.  It's important to rinse the bowl after each dish - most kids would leave the dirty bowl on the sink for Mum to clean - so at least get them to fill it with water if they aren't prepared to wash it properly.  It is also important that the bowl is fully assembled before putting it back in position - we've had instances where other members of the household have just put the bowl minus base back into the opening and Mum has come along, tipped ingredients in and a mess has been the result.

Amy I thought the butterfly could be used to speed 4 - has that changed?

I thought someone on here told me not to use it above speed 3? ???

You can use it on speed 3 but you cannot go higher than speed 4 Amy.

If you go too fast with the butterfly in place it can dislodge from the blades ;)

You can also end up with black bits of plastic in your mashed potato I am told.

Hi cowley and welcome to the forum. Congrats on ordering your TM, I know the wait can feel like forever, (mine was a 10 day turnaround time), but I used that time to search for recipes on here and a couple of other places in preparation for the big day :)
Also stocked my pantry with a few items...it really did help to pass the time.....the TM is a great invention, hope you will enjoy yours

TY. This is what I made today. Garlic foccacia and sausage rolls. And it was nice not having to put my hands in the sausage mince mix lol. The foccacia I just made from the recipe on the packet of baking flour I bought. I am not one for following recipes usually and I didn't have any trouble adapting this recipe to the thermie.

Of course the foccacia was gone five minutes after the teenagers got home from school. The sausage rolls are going in the lunchbox so I have been guarding them. I made more than whats in the picture.

Tomorrow I have consultant training but Friday I am thinking of making a cheesecake. I have never made one in my life but I am feeling so inspired now.

Oh and we had mashed potatoes and pumpkin last night and everyone loved it, with steamed veges in the varome.

It's so exciting isn't it.
