Title: Birdsville and Back.
Post by: cookie1 on August 04, 2013, 09:58:55 am
Well we left this morning and are in our first camp tonight. It isn't cold thank goodness. I am being persuaded to have a shower soon. I will be brave.
We had a good run today. I will be very intermittent with my forum use for the next couple of weeks. This camp is right near a mobile tower so I am doing well for 3G.

We are inEucla tonight and have coverage. Unfortunately my iPad battery is low and we don't have power, so I will have to charge it in the car tomorrow. All is well. Sadly the other guy in the group has the flu and feels horrid. His wife got brave today and drove. She had been too scared to.
I have got very good at hammering in tent pegs and getting them out the next morning. Showering and toilet ing in our own little tent !

How exciting Jeninwa. What are they driving, I will keep my eyes peeled. Robyn, that is an unusual place for a holiday. Why did they select Birdsville?

We are in Port Augusta tonight. I tried to post photos last night but the coverage was very poor. We can now start on our adventure after travelling 2400km. Tomorrow we go up to Wilpena Pound. I haven't been there for years.
We aren't towing Bedlam, hence iam doing some of the driving  I don't  drive when we tow. I'm not sure how much coverage we will have in the next week or so, but I will do my best Judy and Denise.

We won't be in Birdsville for the races. Not our kind of thing and it will be very crowded then.

I can't see them either. Damn, I wonder what happened to them?
I can see them on tapatalk!
Today we travelled from Port Augusta to Wilpena Pound. The scenery has been lovely and the pound is very pretty. A lot of old tumble down historical buildings. Quorn is lovely, and we had lunch in Hawker.
It is so lovely here, we are all set up and comfortable among beautiful trees.
I am having trouble loading photos at the moment, I'll try again later.

Geoff's Grandfather once had a hotel in Hawker Cookie but I think they pulled it down and reassembled it somewhere else.

We've had plenty of rain this winter so everything should be looking very green and lush up there.  Nice to see you are running nicely with the itinerary you sent me.

We have made it. We arrived in Birdsville mid afternoon today. We have seen some amazing things and places and taken wonderful photos.
I want to re name the post " Around Australia Inland"   We started in WA, then to SA, now we are in QLD, in a few days we will be in NSW, then to the tip of Victoria,.  A small circle inland taking in several states.
We are camped on the billabong in Birdsville. We plan on a beer at the pub tomorrow as we can walk back to camp. I'll try and post photos if tapatalk will let me.
The get together at Chookie's and Ral's sounded wonderful.

Gert you are so right about the sky. We have all been happily surprised with it. It seems to be extra blue.
We plan to spend today walking round, washing and relaxing. That way we don't use the cars and don't have to put down the camps.

Yes Judy we are a little ahead of our plans. But we will stay here an extra night. Thank you for all your good wishes.
I guess I had better get up now, the rest of the camp are up and have had breakfast!

Today we left our camps set up and walked round Birdsville. It is only small so was easy to do. We had a coffee at the bakery. It was lovely and the service was so quick. The people in the information bay were knowledgable and helpful. We had a drink in the pub and then dinner. Great service, friendly people and not a bad meal. We didn't have to cook it or wash up.
We love Birdsville, it seems so friendly and we think a great place.

We had a lovely day today. We went out to the edge of the Simpson Desert to see Big Red, a big sand hill. It was very windy, and we managed to have to use 4 wheel drive in the car park. We explored all round and tomorrow we have to move on. There will be no 3G for a few days now.

We went to a 40th birthday party at Big Red July last year. Is there still water on the Birdsville side? It's lovely to see your photos and be reminded of the wonderful time we had. Enjoy those stars and watch out for the skinny dingo.
Title: Re: Birdsville and Back.
Post by: cookie1 on August 19, 2013, 11:23:48 am
Yes Thermesa there is still water there. It goes well with Big Red. We are in Broken Hill now. From Birdsville we went down to Haddon Corner, where SA and QLD meet and camped there for a night. Had a couple of small sand dunes to go over but we coped. From there we went to Innamincka. We had planned to stay there but decided to go out to the Burke and Wills Dig tree about 69 km out. We stayed there the night on Cooper Creek. It was lovely and I heard dingoes howling at night.
From there we decided to head across station country to Tibooburra. The ranger had told us about the road. All was well until we came to a junction and some bright spark had removed the sign to show the way to Tibooburra. We had a conference and chose. Fortunately it was correct. Further on we came to a T junction with the same problem. Someone had taken the sign. A truck came along ( the first vehicle we had seen all day) and he told us the way. It was a little stressing.
Some of the roads leave a lot to be desired. We got sick of dust, flies and bumpy roads. The scenery is wonderful.
I would do the Birdsville track again willingly. Not down to Innamoncka though.
We spent last night in Tibooburra. A lovely little town. We had a coffee in one of the 2 pubs there and Clifton Pugh had painted some very interesting photos in there. Quite explicit.
I'll try and post a couple of the more exciting photos.

Great photos Cookie, looks like you're having a great time.

I've sat on that big bench in Broken Hill many a time. I was born there and lived there until at the age of 21 I moved to Adelaide. We go back to visit every year.  Richard says the beer goes down way to well in Broken Hill!

Yes Judy, ahead of schedule. Our friends were getting a little fed up with camping and having to heat water for showers etc etc. so we missed Cameron Corner and only spent one night in the Innamoncka area.
We hope to spend a night at the Head of the Bight to see the whales on the way home. Possibly an extra night at Burra or somewhere too.

No Judy, they forgot to bring any gear!
We went for a morning cruise on a paddle steamer this morning. The most exciting part was going through the lock. Great fun.
I think our friends are getting a little exhausted. They don't like to be away from home too long, which is fair enough. It is wonderful travelling with them as they are such fun.
Tomorrow we are off to Burra in SA.

Nikkit you'll have to go to Daylesford, now that's what I call cold! I spoke to a little old lady walking up the street under her brolly - her husband wanted to go there to live and I don't think she is a happy chappy.  He probably went there in warmer weather and thought what a lovely place it was, it certainly is but you have to be prepared for the winter.

Here we are in Burra and it is raining. It is the first rain we have had the entire trip. Our companions are tiring which is sad as we would like to be away for a while yet, but it doesn't matter. They are lovely to travel with and we have fun. The erecting the tent everyday is tiring and the novelty wears, off after a couple of days.
Today we came from Mildura to Burra. We spent a short time in Renmark, had lunch by the river in Waikerie and spent time in Morgan. I love it there. We then crossed the Murray on the fantastic car ferry. I love them.
Judy we are doing the Burra passport thing tomorrow. I have done it before and it is so informative. Burra has so much history attached to it with its copper mining.

I took this in Mildura last night as the sun was setting.

Driving onto the car ferry.

What is left of one of the mines at Burra. The water is about 50 metres deep the sign said.

I guess that is a good thing Judy. It was wet in Burra last night and this morning. But it has cleared here in Port Augusta and will probably be a cool night.
I have done some much needed washing. Ready for the run home.

Some of the historical buildings from Burra. There are so many it is hard to decide which ones to share.

Thank you all for the kind words. We are in Eucla tonight. Back in WA if only by 12 km or so.
It has been overcast and very windy. The ocean of the bight didnt look as blue today.

And watch out for the camels too Cookie, last time we went through we got a bit too up close and personal with one. Missed him by a bee's ... not very much at all.  :o :o I did think my days had come to an end with a whopping great hairy camel sitting on my lap in the 4wd! I'd rather hit a roo any day!
Safe journey home.

We are at a bush ca about 430km from home. It is cold, rainy and windy. It doesn't really matter. This morning just after we got up (6am) there was the most beautiful rainbow in the sky. Such sharp colours.
We have had a great time and really appreciate the fact that friends came with us. We have had heaps of laughs and lots of fun.

This is our last camp. It will be nice not to have to put it up and take it down every day.
