Title: I'm devastated
Post by: judydawn on December 23, 2013, 08:54:02 am
DD phoned to say GS has chicken pox  :'( :'( :'(  Neither Geoff nor I have had them so I cannot risk becoming infected by GS and then taking it to Geoff or the other residents.  So all my plans have now been cancelled ie going down to Middleton with DD, her family + her in-laws for an overnight stay in their holiday home and coming back to town on Christmas morning after watching the GKs open their presents to have lunch with Geoff at the nursing home.  I have been making salads and a dessert to take down there so now hopefully I can get them to DD - far too much for me to get through on my own so she may as well have them to enjoy.

Oh Judy I am so sorry. You just can't win sometimes . Hopefully DD's can come and pick up the food. Too risky to go there. Amazing how so many are getting sick . Too much stress when plans go awry.

Oh JD I am so very sorry.... How awful. You've made the only decision you can.
Chicken pox is terrible if you get it as an adult. My exH had it he and DD went down the same day, he was so bad he almost went to hospital.

I so hope you have friends nearby who will be pleased to see you over the festivities.
Thinking of you very much, sending love from us all here
DJ xx

Post by: judydawn on December 23, 2013, 09:35:14 am
I'm not bothered that much, mind you as soon as someone says something to me I'll probably burst into tears.  I didn't expect to see DD & family on Christmas Day anyway as I knew they'd be away so this is the reason I then organised 8 meals out in 2 weeks so that I didn't feel miserable in the lead up to Christmas.  I figured I'd be ready for a rest after going out so much LOL.  The opportunity then arose that if I went down to Middleton with Jo tomorrow, stayed overnight with everyone else then her FIL would bring me back to Adelaide in time to have lunch with Geoff because he had to come back anyway to pick up his other son to take him down south for Christmas Day.  Poor Fletcher is very sad because he is the cause Grandma can't go but DD promised him they will take me down there as soon as the coast is clear.  DD hasn't had chicken pox either so she is hoping she doesn't become a victim.

We don't Skype BZB and that would probably make me feel even more left out in the cold ;D  I'll be fine, I'm used to these sorts of things happening to me at the last minute.

I won't be needing anyone on Christmas Day, I'll spend a few hours with Geoff then I'm having Mum for tea.  There are plenty of places I could go but I've caught up with everyone over the past couple of weeks and I'll be happy to just stay in my area and have an easy day.

I'm about to take all the food down and Jo will get the kids to wave to me from the balcony. The presents are already down at Middleton, she took mine for them down as well at the weekend.  I'll stay well clear of her too, no hugs or kisses this trip which is good as then I will probably be able to hold it all together.

Thanks again girls, it's good that I can share my miseries with you all  ;D

Gee, Judy, I can imagine how gutted you must feel now.  BZB's idea sounds a solution! How do you feel about trying that ?  I remember when my two came down with chicken pox.. DS and all his mates from preschool came down with it over Christmas and then DD on New Year's Eve !! It's a miserable thing!!

Judy that is awful. I wished I lived a little nearer as you would be very welcome here. I had chicken pox as an adult and believe me you certainly don't want it. I was rather ill.
Has Fletcher been immunised? Hopefully it will only be a mild case.

Have a sleep in, make something lovely for breakfast, visit Geoff and then have a lovely dinner with your Mum. Or jump on a plane and I will set you a place.

Oh dear. But I can definitely attest that you don't want chicken pox as an adult. Have a glass of champagne and enjoy a lighthearted fun movie at the end of the day after spending time with your DH and mum.  Hugs Judy.

Oh Judy that's awful news as you were so looking forward to seeing the kids opening their presents. Hopefully Fletcher won't have it too badly. Baby Jacksonhad it 2 weeks ago but it wasn't severe.
DH and I are unwell with gastro that has gone through the family in the last few weeks. Maybe we too will be on our own Christmas Day.
Make sure you enjoy a nice glass of Moscato on Christmas Eve and have some with your mum on Christmas Day.
Take care x

What a shame my DS didn't live closer he would've put a dent in it for you  :D That's no good about the chickenpox outbreak. It would be unbearable in this heat and you are wise to avoid it if you can. *big hug* and I can feel your disappointment
Title: Re: I'm devastated
Post by: judydawn on December 23, 2013, 11:17:21 am
Well I'm back and I held it together nicely.  Fletcher only has a mild case because of course they have been immunized but I bet when he passes it forward, it will knock someone around.  As I left the kids both said Happy Christmas Grandma but he added and Happy New York  :D :D  He comes out with some things that lad.  Jo wanted to keep all my presents to the kids untouched until I can get to see them open them but I didn't want that, it wouldn't be fair so hopefully she will let them open the lot.  Mine from them are down at Middleton as well but Geoff's lucky, I was able to bring his gift home - a nice crayfish, he will love that.  He never gets that in Morpeth  ;D

I will definitely have a moscato watching the carols tomorrow night MF and I hope you feel better soon and will not be quarantined from your family on Christmas Day.

Thanks girls.

Post by: Bonsai on December 23, 2013, 11:44:58 am
Oh Judy how disappointing for you. It's fairly unusual for adults not to be immune to chickenpox as many of us have had it but don't remember. Maybe next time you or Geoff need a blood test for something ask the doctor to test for immunity. I know it won't help this time but would be handy to know for the future. You can be immunized but it isn't cheap!
Title: Re: I'm devastated
Post by: judydawn on December 23, 2013, 11:49:52 am
I did check Bonsai, Mum was definite in her answer that I hadn't had it and Geoff's sister didn't know about him so better to be safe than sorry.  In Geoff's frail condition doctors advise to definitely avoid contact.

How truely awful for you (and for Fletcher too). It's such a pity you will miss out on seeing the kids open their pressies, but I bet you'll get a lovely phone call on Christmas morning. Enjoy your lunch with Geoff and dinner with your mum.xox

Title: Re: I'm devastated
Post by: Wonder on December 23, 2013, 08:04:07 pm
Judy great that you were able to at least see the kids and DD. It sounds like you will still have a nice Christmas Day and I'm sure you enjoy yourself wherever you end up. I'm sure Geoff will love his gift - will you do something with it for him for a Christmas treat?  I definitely agree better not to risk the contact, I had chicken pox as a kid but got them again when pregnant with DD, the doctor said most people think you can't get them a second time but it depends on everyone's individual immune system.

Sorry to hear about your poor GS and how that has changed your plans for christmas

At least you will e able to spend it with Geoff and your mum

We will all be thinking about you.

I'm alone with my DH this christmas too and had to open my christmas ham to eat last night because the porterhouse I planned  didn't smell the best when I took it out of the fridge for tea last night and it wasn't worth the risk of eating it.

The best made plans .........grrr

Judy, just caught up with this thread. Oh no, well on the bright side at least you knew & he didnt develop them when you were down there. That would have been terrible. Are you sure your not immunised?

Have a lovely day with Geoff & your mum :)

I actually know of 2 fathers who choose to work on Christmas Day - that says everything about them doesn't it?

Enjoy the hours that DH is with you tomorrow maddy then send him on his way with a nice little package of nibblies to enable him to get through the rest of the day.

Positive not immunised Hally.  It's all good, I've been out early to the shops for fruit and veg and the curtain rod I need to hang my new curtain.

JD sorry to hear about your GS - Chicken Pox are nasty 😩😩😩

Astarra and Maddy sorry that your whole families won't be able to relax together tomorrow.  Unfortunately I have had to work on Christmas Day before, I think it's harder on the family than the person working!  But I've always known months in advance if I'm rostered on on. Xmas day so I think unless it is an emergency, your DH work was pretty slack Astarra.

My dad also worked a couple of Christmas days when I was very young! He started work at 7am but he still got to see us opening our Santa presents - we normally woke about 5am 😃😃😃😃

Hopefully you will get to have one meal with your DHs!

Tonight I had a text from DD on behalf of all those down at their holiday house where I should be  :-)) in regard to the food I send down with her.  I thought I'd pass on her comments here.

"Yummy brown rice salad Mum - that's a Christmas winner with the cranberries

Cherry ripe cheesecake slice was also very nice - kids liked it too

The peanut butter bonbons got gobbled up quick smart, will need the recipe for that one."

The egg, bacon and spinach second salad was sent down in separate packs to put together at the last minute but they didn't need that one tonight so will mix it for tea tomorrow night.  She said they thought of me lots today and were sorry it turned out like it did when it was all planned so well.

It was lovely to receive this message, no it didn't make me teary at all, I just appreciated the feedback.

It's like being on holiday folks, loving it.  An absolutely gorgeous house my DD has built down here.  We went cockling yesterday, into Port Elliott today then I helped move some gravel from the pile.  The line for the bakery in Pt Elliott was out the door and down the street, a very popular bakery here down south. Some really nice, exclusive & expensive shops and so many tourists around - the storekeepers must love this time of the year.  Always cooler here than in Adelaide, so quiet at night and this morning, apart from Jo, we all slept in until after 10am.
Jo has a ninja blender, we bought a box of strawberries for $11 on the way down and with a freezer full of other fruits, smoothies are often on the menu - even 9yr old GD makes a batch.

Well I'm back from my mini holiday but we crammed so much in in 3 days/2 nights.  Today we drove to Goolwa to their Sunday markets, loved them but didn't have time to look at everything as we wanted to catch the steam Cockle Train to Victor Harbour, something none of us had ever done.  Shopped and ate in Victor, had a ride on the ferris wheel and the kids went in those huge balls which float on top of the water. Just time for an ice-cream before heading back to the train station. Packed up our gear and headed for home as it's GD's birthday tomorrow and we are all going out for an evening meal - the kids will head back to Middleton  on Tuesday with friends and I'll recover from being on the go every day  ;D

I think I will CC, nothing like your own bed and it did take me forever to get to sleep last night.

Thanks to you and Cookie for doing my share of the moderating whilst I've been away.  The coverage down there wasn't the greatest, only 1 or 2 bars with Telstra and even less for SIL with Optus so I was just happy if I could read the postings without commenting too much.   :-* :-*

Sounds like a wonderful few days Judy.  A break away does everyone the world of good; refreshes the mind, plus it's so good to get back home afterwards.  :D

It is fun BZB, here's (https://www.google.com.au/search?q=how+to+go+cockling&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=u6LAUs3sA4eaiAfix4D4DQ&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=638#q=how+to+go+cockling+at+Goolwa&tbm=isch) some images - we just used our hands to dig for them.  They're also known as pipis.

Yummy Judy. I call them clams and like them raw as well as cooked.  There are all sorts and you can get some quite good sized ones but not here so much. Lucky me I can be fresh cryopacked  ones just up the road. The salt water cockles I love too but have never seen any up here. When in Thailand we eat kilos of them.  Do the GK's  like them?

Amber ate one raw down on the beach but funnily enough, we suspended them in a bucket of sea water to purge overnight then were so busy the next day we forgot all about them LOL.  In that time they spit out the sand, impossible to eat if they are not purged.  The kids are pretty good and will try things, some of the chutneys & relishes they tried at the market didn't touch my lips  ;)

Judy, I used to go digging for these when I was a kid growing up in Penang!! We called it "korek siput" that translates to dig for clams :D

Was so much fun, and yummy :P

Good, I'm glad you know all about it then BZB.  It's interesting to hear what other countries call these things.

We go cockling quite a bit at Monkey Mia. We then use the cockles as bait to catch small bait fish that we then use as bait for bigger fish.
We tried cooking and eating them once but after they were purged and cooked up with a little butter and garlic we decided they still looked like bait and couldn't eat them.  :-X

We used to go for pipis when I was younger - dad loved them, but my sister and I hated them - it didn't make it any better that it always seemed to be wet and cold when we went to dig for them.

One of those days was very windy wasn't it Deb but that wouldn't have bothered the kids. It's so lovely down there and it's been years since I was there.
