Title: Does anyone have a kitchenaid as well as a TMX....
Post by: Meagan on August 05, 2009, 03:03:52 pm
The only reason I ask is because I already have a kitchenaid which I love :-*. More an out of interest question really as I don't plan on getting rid of her when I get my TMX.

:o ;D Just realised that saying the K word might be the equivalent of using a swear word on a TMX forum  ;) :D :o

LMAO - I don't have a KitchenAid, I do have a Kenwood Chef that has never been out of the cupboard in over 12 months since i bought the TMX ;D

Hi Meagan
I have a KA that I bought before "seeing the light"  :D, but I will be keeping it too, as I figure that it will still be used for larger quantity mixes and such.  Also, when my DD grows up and leaves home (a while yet), she can take something with her cause she sure as heck ain't getting my TM!! ;D.  Besides that I love the look of it sitting on my bench & reminds me of my dear gran!  Here I go getting sentimental about kitchen appliances :-\

I have a KA - better not swear  ;) ;) ;).  Actually I have a Magimix (Robot Coupe) too.

Don't give them up - the KA is best for making meringue for pavlovas.  Also if you want to make Italian meringue it is superior.  I also have attachments for making sausages and for rolling and cutting pasta.  There is an attachment for slicing and dicing, but it is not as good as the Magimix.

Magimix doesn't do meringue very well, but slices, grates, has a citrus press for massive amounts of lemon/orange juice.

Think hard before giving them up.  I have had my Magimix for over 30 years - how could I abandon him???

Ha ha she won't want it!! She will want you to buy her a TMX. My boys have already told me that I will have to buy them one when they leave home as that is the best way they know how to cook  :o :o :o Even though I have taught them from very young and they can all cook a meal, that has apparently all gone out the window when TMX arrived and now I have to buy them all one.  :-)) :-)) :-)) Maybe I should buy them one now and tell them to leave home with it LMAO ;D ;D

I also have a kitchen aid which I would not get rid of.
Love them both!!!

I agree with Thermomixer and Trudy!  I got rid of everything except my Kitchenaid, which I use for beating lots of air into things - eg pavlova.

I have a Kenwood chef that rarely sees the light of day now. When I do meringues I use my trusty Sunbeam hand mixer. I would never part with that.

I (we) were given 'red' for our wedding so there is no way I would give the KA away - I love it and have the pasta and icecream attachments for it. Yes I agree it does do great meringue/pavlova mixing.
You have all made me feel much better about wanting a TMX whilst already having a KA  ;D Thanks LOL

I have a Kenwood and he sits on the bench too.. I figure I still need to teach my kids how to cook sans TMX at some stage....  :P

Oh and I have given my 14yo a choice for when he leaves home.. I'll go halves in a car or buy him a TMX..(actually might give him this one and buy myself a new one! ROFL!)  ;)

They might have a new model out by then so everyone wins LOL ;D :D and I agree about the TMX being a whole lot safer.

What's making meringues like in the TM compared to the KA?  Just curious, I've tried beating eggwhites once but I think the whites were too cold (not long enough out of the fridge).  They beat up ok but not brilliant.

K3 I am not sure, as I am yet to get my TMX... I just know that the KA does a fabtastic job of whipping egg whites and I always keep my eggs in the fridge and whip them cold ???

Kitchen Aid is FAR superior for beating egg whites - but the TMX will do it, just need heat (which it doesn't say in the old books)

The KA is better for Italian meringue - .... but not many would make it, so forget that

Has anyone bought a KA after they bought a TMX? I'm eyeing one off particularly for the better mixing ability, plus the pasta & sausage filler attachments. Would it be worth it?

Ayla, I had a KA before my TMX and I still use it, especially for meringues as I don't like doing them in the TMX (as marvellous a machine that it is!).  My children bought me the pasta attachment and I just love it.  I make the dough in the TMX and use the pasta attachment on the KA.  It is fantastic.  Both machines are on my kitchen bench as I use both all the time.  Hope this helps.

I've had my KAs practically forever.  Got my first one in '67, when they were still made by Hobart.  Have upgraded a few times as they offered bigger motors.
While I still have all of my old ones, except one I gave to my stepdaughter, I regularly use both a 5-qt, for which I have a copper liner that I use exclusively for egg whites, and a 6-qt, 600 Pro that I use for any other mixing except for heavy bread doughs (for that I have a DLX 2000 with greater capacity).

I have stated on other topics that I simply do not like the results I get with egg whites in the TM31.  The volume is consistently less and I have done comparisons, side-by-side, same weight of egg whites, on three different occasions.  I have totally given up on beating egg whites in the TM, as I can get a better result even with a hand whisk.  I've had partial to total collapse of the meringue even after scrupulously taking apart and cleaning the TM bowl and rinsing it with vinegar then wiping it dry.

For those who are getting an excellent result, I applaud you, but it just doesn't work for me.

A couple of months ago I got new whisks for both the 5 and 6 quart KAs and it is a marvel.   I am amazed at how rapidly it produces perfect volume and texture.
It's called Pourfect Whisk-A-Bowl (http://www.cheftools.com/searchprods.asp?txtsearch=pourfect+whisk-a-bowl&image.x=0&image.y=0&ProductSearchBy=2&gclid=CInr1tuq-6UCFQRubAodVH2w1Q) and it is even available at Amazon but I got mine from this vendor (I've also had the Scrape-A-Bowl beaters for well over a year) and after trying one on the 6-qt I ordered one for the 5.
I don't know if they are yet available in Australia but a friend visiting from England in October got one while she was here to take home.
Hobart has offered a whisk with more wires for "professional" use in their 5-qt mixer for a couple of years and I have one of those, as they fit the KA just fine.  However this new whisk outdoes that one also.

I do use "Rizzo".......aka pink ladies  8)......for all meringue, and I do prefer most cakes with her too.

I do make a few cakes with the TM, but I do enjoy mixing with the KA, and it's great for large quantity cakes etc.
I did buy a beater blade for it, which makes any mixing a breeze as it scrapes and mixes at the same time.  I have found that the beater blade does cut down on mixing time, as well as not having to scrape the unmixed bits on the bottom  ;)

After Christmas I will order a mincer attachment for it......as I haven't had too much success mincing with the TM.

P.S.......the "pourfect" scraper attachment has been withdrawn from sale here.....it was designed too big for the bowl.  I had this brand first, but returned it and purchased the beater blade (much better design  ;))
If you've seen Julie's wizz bang pasta attachment.....that's another reason to have a KA  :)

Now why does it not surprise me that yours is pink maddy  :D :D  I've seen adverts for them in so many different colours - you name it, they have it but just how easy it is to get a particular colour I wouldn't know.  To be honest, I never even knew the machine existed until I joined this forum - I still have my trusty Sunbeam mixmaster and I bought both my girls a Kenwood Chef many years ago.

i also have a KA and plan on keeping it.  I mentioned on a thread re pavlovas - I still prefer the 6 egg white pavlova that I am able to perfect using my KA, however I would never say that I would  hate to live without the KA - a comment I have frequently made since being introduced to the TMX in June.
Cheers - Robyn  :)  :)  :)

I still use my KA for my cakes and making pasta dough.  (as well as using the attachments).

I've tried using the butterfly to whip yolks and sugar when making the 'custard' for ice cream, but it never works as well or as quick as the mixer, just doesn't get as thick.

Plus the mixer will make my pasta into dough not just crumbs that I then have to knead together with my hands (which I find hurts my hands).

All this doesn't bother me in the least though because what I do use the TM for, it does it brilliantly.  If something happened to it tomorrow I'd find a way to replace it.  :)

I love my KA! There's no room in my kitchen, so it sits on my laundry bench as the laundry is connected. I have the boring grey as that's all they had at the time and I couldn't wait!
Thanks Maddy for that beater blade site. I'll be getting one of those.
I mostly use my KA for meringues. I made mini pav's for Xmas lunch and they were lovely. Also large sponges and cakes. Use the TMX for everything else.

I have the Empire Red Kitchenaid mixer which used to take  pride of place on my kitchen bench until I bought my thermie- my brother in law has just named my thermie the  "cyclotherm". I cannot part with my mixer but , in all honestly, I haven't used it once since buying my Thermomix, except for making meringue, which I can't seem to do  successfully in the Thermomix. Also, I haven't tried that often, anyway! There is no way i would sell it, even though I hardly use it at the moment.

I got a gorgy red Kenwood for Chrissy. Have christened it today with a carrot cake - it is on the bench next to TMX. I will use it a reasonable amount for bisuits and cakes as I think it mixes better then TMX and for cream etc. Will be god used in conjunction but if I had to choose one TMX wins hands down. I don't NEED the mixer with a TMX but it is good to have, wheras I don need a TMX.

I didn't buy a Kitchenaid because I only want something for cream and egg whites. Mixing cake batter is an extra that I will do between TMX and Kenwood depending on what else is in it. I could have got a cheapy Sunbeam and it would be just as good. Can't justify a $700 Kitchenaid for beating a few eggs occassionally..................................

MJ......just to clarify, Andiesenji posted the link for the pourfect whisk, which showed the scrape-a-bowl......but don't get that one!

The beater blade is the better fit and design, and you can pick it up here online: http://www.fullybaked.com.au/products/beaterblade/  or alternatively you can sometimes pick them up cheaper on ebay  ;)

Oh that's good then  ;)  I didn't want you to get the wrong one!
They are fantastic, but you might just have to adjust the clearance to suit the bowl.....when the head is tilted you'll see the silver disk with a slot in it.  Just give it a slight turn with a coin or butter knife to adjust the fit.

I agree that the Pourfect bowl scraper does not work as well as the beater blade.

I've had the Beater blade 6L since it was introduced and also have a SideSwipe which I use for soft cake and quick bread batters that need only limited beating (to keep them from becoming tough) as it really mixes batters more rapidly.

Some people reviewing the SideSwipe complained that bits of the silicone (bright blue) would come off into whatever was being mixed, but I've been using mine for 2 1/2 years without a sign of disintegration.
It does constantly drive the batter down into the bowl better than the Beater blade, in my experience but it is not efficient for stickier or thicker doughs, such as for cookies, etc.

I'm an inveterate gadgeteer and tend to buy new and interesting stuff just "because" and sometimes they don't work so well.
I did get the Pourfect bowl scraper blade but returned it because the top part on one side drug too much on the bowl and the squealing sound drove me up a wall.  It needed some re-engineering to fit the bowl perfectly.

However, the whisk beater I mentioned is an absolute gem.   It works as rapidly as the 24 wire whisk I had in my old 20 quart Hobart when I was still catering.  That could beat a quart of egg whites to perfect meringue in 40 seconds.
