I thought I would start a thread on using up excess ingredients.
At some point we have an excess of a staple with a use by date, fresh produce that seems to ripen all at once or just left overs that need to be used up.
As I live on the land, I can't just nick up the shop and I don't like wastage so I'm going old school like my Grandma would have done back in her day (well trying to anyway)

I need to use up left over chocolate sauce from the EDC
I made profiteroles but the sauce recipe made way too much.
What else can I do with it?
-
You could use it as a topping over ice cream or maybe as a base to make chocolate milkshake or hot chocolate :)
-
i have used in custard

Great idea Chrissa.

Lamingtons? Chocolate fondue, crepes, icecream, and my all time favourite dip pretzels in it (don't knock it til you tried it
). There's also nothing wrong with dipping a spoon in it every time you visit the kitchen.

LOL Kimmy

Kimmy you're terrible - I actually considered the spoon idea.
Great ideas everyone.
I made hot chocolate very nice. Would never have thought of that. I have to work today so I'm taking the rest in with marshmallows and going to make the girls hot chocolates 😊☺️

Have veggies left from roast dinner. Will make soup out of carrot and parsnip mash , will add lentils. Will use leftover roast pumpkin and Awesome cheese sauce in a lasagne. Leftover cauliflower in fritters. Roast potatoes in bread. Yes , I always cook too much.
Funny that no Apple Cake Tart was left over. ,!

Lovely post Chrissa as I can see myself putting up a lot of questions here ;)
I have got a kg packet of milk powder which is about to expire and not able to decide what to do with it,
I know the best would be some dessert but not able to make up my mind, any ideas and probably something which is toddler friendly? :)

Almost every weekend after doing my week's cooking I have heaps of vegetables left over (I simply can't ignore them at market) and simply throw everything into a pot with lentis / rice / cashews / tofu and make a huge pot of stew. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but somehow - don't ask me how - it always turns out really delicious and filling, especially on these cold nights when you want something to warm body and soul. A simple - rustic? - answer to using up all leftovers and a whole meal in a pot.

Not quite a toddler friendly recipe but you could make Condensed Milk with some of your milk powder
e.g. Making Condensed Milk from Scratch (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=12638.msg264672#msg264672) This could be a key ingredient to use in another recipe ;)
There are other condensed milk recipes here on the forum too :)

I was going to say condensed milk. You could also mix it up with water and use in any recipe requiring milk.
-
It looks as though this will be a very useful section.

I was going to say condensed milk too ;D i make up a few batches and pop them in the freezer
you could also freezer the powder in 1 cup batch in and zip lock bag, should work :-))

Condensed milk is a great idea, I actually have a dessert recipe which my mom makes which uses condensed milk.. I have always had store bought condensed milk and never tried one at home, thanks to you guys and TMX, probably one more item cut down from the shopping list ;)

a few ideas here

If you google 'uses for powdered milk' you will find lots of uses that you'd never think of.

Thank you Judy :) Didnt know you can use powdered milk in painting ;)
I think I will make condensed milk out of it..
I had to use up a tin of evaporated milk and I made Chookie's Chocolate Delight, its sitting in the fridge, looks so tempting.... hubby had to continuously stop me as I was trying to eat it even before it was set...http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2356.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2356.0)
