I've been prescribed tablets and I read through the info data that came with my medication yesterday and was surprised to find that soya products are not supposed to be eaten when on this medication. So I flicked through the internet and there seem to be conflicting opinions ranging from absolutely no soya to eating soya products four hours after taking the tablet and no sooner. Does anyone know what's correct? Since I've cut down on meat, it's a bit of a bummer if I now have to cut out soya (although I don't eat it that often).
Thanks in advance for any help!

That's really interesting Vivacity. I've never heard of that before but my mother has just recently had to take medication for an thyroid that was underactive as well. She works at the GP's clinic so I'll ask her about it. ???

Thanks, ILB! I was surprised too when I read the info pamphlet. Apparently, the medication can't be absorbed by the body properly if you eat soya.

Only recently heard that u cant eat any green veggies if on worfrin (spelling???)

Warfarin ILB - Mum's on it and you are right. Dark green vegies are no go apparently.

Thanks JD! A neighbour is/was on it and they told me.

Warfarin is agreat drug but you have to be very careful with it. Will ask DD about the thyroid medication and soya products.

Soya, like brassica vegetables (eg cabbage) is a goitrogen. It stops the body absorbing iodine, and iodine is needed to make thyroid hormone, thyroxin. So if the medicine is to help the body make or convert thyroid hormones, you would not want to limit your iodine uptake. (If the medicine is actually artificial thyroxin, not sure what the link would be)
BTW, cooking brassicas s thought to inactivate the goitrogen. Again, I'm not sure about soya.

Vivacity I checked with DD about soya products and the medication. (she is a pharmacist) She said it is best to have several hours between the two and advised you to have a chat to your pharmacist if you're unsure. Hope that helps.

Hi, Cookie1. Thanks for the information :) I'm just going to leave out soya products (and coke, aaaagh :-[) until my levels are where they should be. I'm still not too sure whether I should be watching my intake of iodine or not, but I'll just have to research on the net.

Hope you get it sorted out... :-\
