I thought I'd post a warning, on what not to do......as I stupidly did! :-))
I made my cob loaf, pre-heated the oven....and I remembered the tips on placing a dish of boiled water underneath the bread for a crunchy crust.
I did this, using a pyrex dish I had on the shelf below, while the oven was preheating.
I poured water into the dish and.......KA-BOOM......it exploded and shattered into pieces :o :o :o
(http://)(http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt266/nachothecat/104_1440.jpg)
Now common sense tells me that I should have not had the pyrex dish pre-heated first, and perhaps I should have used my metal baking dish.
Thought I would pass on this warning to prevent a possible heart attack like I almost had!!!
-
Wow Maddy that would have given you a fright, no injuries I hope.
-
No injuries, but the poor cat nearly reached the ceiling as he walked past as it happened (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing002.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
-
Been there cleaned that :-)) 8) :o Scary huh!!
-
Oh Meagan, that looks an awful mess to clean up!
Poor cat! :D
I use a pyrex dish too, but having shattered a hot dish on a cold sink years ago, I make sure I pour water into it first!
-
What is your next party trick going to be Maddy ??? ???
Glad all is well though and everyone can learn from your mistake. Great photo of the aftermath, would have loved you to have got a snap of the cat's reaction too.
-
yes :-)) but can you still glue the dish together?

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing002.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) It was a valid reason to visit the kitchen shop and buy another one........and a few other things ;)
A video of the cats reaction and mine, would have landed us first prize on funniest home videos......for sure! (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing002.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I'm glad neither you nor the cat have a weak heart Maddy.

Lol Maddy my cat scatts when she heres the TMX, and when she 1st walked past it and I grinding something she left a trail of fur and laughing kids behind her. I laugh still over her reactment, although I don't think she has many cat lives left lol Poor old girl(fluffy tortoiseshell) I check to see if she is around before I use the TMX, she 10 yrs now and I am determined to get another 10 yrs from her.
-
Oh, I know what you mean Catisa!
Our laid-back "Nacho", is the same.
As soon as he hears me moving the TM, or taking the varoma off......he runs like the wind!

He certainly does not stay in this position :D
-
LOL Maddy!
At least you can see the funny side still! ;D

It would have looked like this Judy.......

lol Maddy I used that pic as my profic pic on facebook for a short while lol. Hmm oh your cat Nacho, by the looks of it has too many Nacho's, but how cute!
I can't talk, if our grey cat (is so big not just fat and flabber he really is a big cat) sits on the fence, I swear I see a slight bow in it lol and the only sports he can do is catch dry cat bikkies in his bowl ;D

ooooops. Thanks for the reminder. Boiling water would probably have been OK. But yes metal pans are good.

Actually T'mer.....I used boiling water.....as I thought that wouldn't be an issue then......but obviously it was :P
-
Arggggh - oh well - back to cooking school.
BTW - love the cat pics - especially your lazy cat ;) Great pic. Did you want to try again for funniest home video - or doesn't the cat go near the oven any more?? I wouldn't :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing002.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) He pretty much stays out of the kitchen now........which is a good thing really ;)

Thanks for posting this reminder Maddy. My Mum recently had a similar thing happen to her. She shattered her lovely pie dish (and the yummy pie in it) when she placed it directly from the fridge into the oven for reheating. Not a good idea, but sometimes you just forget these things. :)

Thanks for this reminder Maddy. I have just bought a Pyrex dish to fit into the Varoma, so will be extra careful. I hate cleaning up broken glass.

A slice of fresh bread picks up the glass shards & splinters wonderfully ;)

I use a cast iron pan that pretty much lives full time in the bottom of my gas oven and has survived high temps followed by a bunch of ice cubes tossed into it.
I have a larger one (an old Dutch oven) in my bread oven and the temp in there can easily get over 700° F (370 C.) I pour hot water into it because a quart or so will fill the oven with steam for the desired period of time (5 minutes) to give the bread's oven spring a bit of a boost as well as producing a lovely crust.

Holy Guacamole! Good to hear you (and the cat) escaped unscathed. Yes even boiling water at 100 degrees is still likely to be at least 80 degrees cooler than the dish, and since glass can't shrink that fast that quickly, it has nowhere else to go but apart I'm afraid.
Whenever something glass breaks here, I can spend the next hour sweeping & vacuuming. No matter how much I clean though, you can bet about a 1 - 10 days later Damaris (and only Damaris, neither me, the boys or the dogs) will step on a piece of glass that got missed.

I had the fun of coming home to a TV with a sizable hole in it, and tiny pieces of glass everywhere two days ago. And in carpet, so it's very hard to get it all out. I'm sure our feet will find the bits the vacuum cleaner missed
Thank goodness for accidental damage insurance - a new TV for $100 excess is quite good value.

Do we dare ask how your TV managed to get a hole in it while you were out?? LCD or CRT?
Russell.
-
I was out, but the kids and DH were at home. Our 5.5yr old CRT is being replaced with a flat screen LED. So excellent value.

Ahh I see,
A Wii controller accident maybe?
Indoor Golf?
Using the ceiling fan as a chair-o-plane?
the list goes on... :)

A Wii controller accident maybe?
After watching my eldest play a few weeks ago, I happened to ponder the percentage of insurance claims that are now related to similar issues.... :P

Apparantly it's significant. That's what our insurance assessor guessed had happened when we made the call. But no, a toddler wooden toy.

WOW!
How long did it take to get the cats claws out of the ceiling???? :D :D
Excellent advice with using fresh bread to clean up broken glass!! WIll have to remember that for the next child inspired disaster.
