Title: Recipe Review - Date and Apple Brownies (A Taste of Vegetarian Cookbook)
Post by: Chelsea (Thermie Groupie) on July 09, 2010, 06:18:49 am
Recipe Name: Date and Apple Brownies

Book Name: A Taste of Vegetarian

Tweaking details:
Next time I would reduce the amount of pecans and dates in the topping.  There was way too much topping and it just fell off as I served the brownies.  I didn't do the optional chocolate and cream drizzle as I felt that the quantity would be way too much (enough to ice a cake) and would completely cover the existing topping.  Instead I just melted a few coveture chocolate squares in a cup and drizzled that over with a spoon.  It added a special touch without having to wash the bowl out again ;).

Review:
We loved this recipe and will definitely make it again.  It was super easy to whip up and quite impressive.  I mucked up and made it in my 18cm tin (instead of my 20cm one) so it took longer to cook, but the brownies were still moist and very yummy.

Score: 4.5 (out of 5*)

You can view the photo here (http://fulllittletummies.blogspot.com/2010/07/filling-tummies-10-day-challenge-update.html).  I am nearing the end of a challenge that I have been doing for my blog - cooking and reviewing 10 recipes from "A Taste of Vegetarian" Cookbook in 10 days.  I am nearly finished thankfully - way too much food!!!  I need to get busy now though and post all of the reviews on the forum also. :)

Thanks for the review Chelsea.  These were recommended to me ages ago and I forgot all about it.

This recipe is delicious.  So moist, and very low fat and sugar.  But not sure about the topping.  The cake was perfectly cooked, but some of the dates are burnt, but you can't tell until you get one as they're black anyway.  Not a nice taste.

Next time I'll either skip the topping, or use this topping (http://fulllittletummies.blogspot.com/2010/05/filling-tummies-whole-grain-chocolate.html) which is delicious.

I've just taken this out of the oven. Looking forward to tasting it. I agree about the topping, think I'll leave it off next time.

This is absolutely gorgeous, so moist and sort of healthy. I think you could almost leave out the tiny bit of sugar you do add. DH has taken it to car club this morning with the knowledge that it is fat free and almost only natural sugars. Definitely a make again recipe.

Looks great - but what happened to the chunk missing from the corner?

This brownie recipe is great - it has stayed really moist and delicious for a few days now - almost all gone.

Also, I didn't have buttermilk so used milk and added 3/4 tablespoon of white vinegar.  So no special ingredients required!

Chelsea, what version of ToV do you have? I couldn't find any typos and in the Tomato Pasta wiht Vegies, it does give clear directions when to add tomatoes, water and pasta. (just replying to your comments on your blog).
Mine is 2009

What I dislike about the book is the index. It's not in alpha order! Makes it so difficult to find anything. I don't like it when recipes are put into sections, either. Makes it hard to find anything.

My edition is Feb 2009.  With the "Tomato Pasta with Vegetables and Feta" the water is to be added in step 3 and then again in step 5. They have probably fixed the typo's in later editions, but I just wish they would give them a decent proof read before they print the first edition.  :)
