Title: massage balm recipes?
Post by: Sunny on October 11, 2010, 11:32:56 pm
Does anyone have a recipe for massage balm? (beeswax plus coconut oil or suchlike)  I see there are some for lip balms but I gather the quantities are probably different as they are more for moisturising rather than providing 'grip' and reducing friction during massage.

Cheers!

I haven't made a massage balm myself, but have made other balms such as a medicated one.

Lighter oils for massage include ricebran, fractionated coconut and grapeseed. I really think you need to experiment yourself to find how much beeswax you need to make the right consistency. You can also use butters such as shea and cocoa.
Use percentages and make 100g batches until you find the best one.

I have a few that I could share but don't as yet have a tmx to trial them in - would you like them as starting points?

Basic Massage Oil
4 Tbsp grape seed oil
2 tsp sweet almond oil
1 tsp wheat germ oil
64 drops essential oil
Place all in bottle and shake together - leave 4 days to synergise.
Massage Cream
1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
130g Copha
100 drops essential oil
Melt copha in TMX (50oC) add olive oil and allow to cool a little. Add essential oil while on speed 2 on keep mixing until cold. Place in dark-coloured jar. You can divide mixture into 4 before adding essential oil and make up four different lots by adding 25 drops of essential oil to each part.
Some ideas for essential oils:
Arthritis, circulation, toning, muscular aches - black pepper, eucalyptus, ginger, rosemary.
Stress and nervous tension - chamomile, juniper, lavender, peppermint.
Sensual massage - neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, ylang ylang.  ;)

Love this recipe Nay Nay, I always just use copha - melted in microwave and add some essential oils, poured into ice cube tray - set and keep in fridge.  I use a cube for a massage.

Adding some Vitamin E helps keep the oils from oxidising as well as being good for the skin too! Just open a capsule and squeeze into the oils (after they're cooled if adding copha)
