Title: What are your top 10 recipes?
Post by: Meagan on December 03, 2010, 01:24:12 pm
So I am sure we have done something like this before but what are your top 10 recipes for main meals? I am inspired by Caroline mentioning the teriyaki chicken and soba noodles from motm was one of her favorite 10 minute meals ;)

We last asked this question way back in May '09 and people's choices have probably changed now Meagan so a good call to ask again.  If you are interested in some of the earlier answers, check them out here.

My Top Ten meals - though I'm sure I'll post this and remember something that should really be on the list!!

Teriyaki chicken/beef/pork  (MOM)

Honey soy chicken wingettes (forum)

My quick easy curry (extra yummy with home made curry paste) (forum)

Butter chicken (Indian)

Chicken in yoghurt (EDC)

Prawns, cous cous/rice, veg and lime cream sauce (varoma) Prawns and cous cous has always been dd2's fav meal. This is so easy with the TMX and can do rice for the ones that don't like cous cous much and a sauce all in less time/easier than the regular meal.

Beef stroganoff (edc - usually with a bit more cayenne)

Chicken rolls - varoma all in one meal - chicken fillet flattened and rolled with a variety of fillings - cheese and ham, feta and spinach, feta and sundried tomatoes - whatever.

Beef casserole and then leftovers for pie - love Robyn's gourmet beef, or a Beef in Beer recipe I made up (think I posted it as a pork in beer?) Great to make a large batch, casserole and rice one night and then a pie with the rest.

And although not my fav but the kids love pasta. So regularly do a pasta dish - sort of based on the creamy tomato salami fettucine from the EDC but usually less cream and not usually salami.
dh, dd3 and I would probably say a hotter curry instead.

Honourable mention to being able to make gravy for roast so quickly and easily in the TMX and marinades for meats for the bbq.

I have had the morrocan and mongolian lamb recipes (motm) on the meal plan for weeks and sure when they actually get made one will make the top ten.

Oh and I know it's a number eleven but chicken stir fry - so easy and yummy. Haven't had it in weeks so probably why it's slipped to number 11, but on next weeks plan.

I think I'll need to think seriously about this as I don't make the same thing very often.
We love curries either meat or chicken.
Baf's award winning chicken and tweaks
Quiches with all the prep done in the TMX
Robyn's beef casserole
and...

Thought I would bump this again mine are:

Chicken stroganoff EDC
Fast Chicken Curry EDC
Butter Chicken Indian Cookbook
Red Curry Chicken Risotto by Maddy
Nicos Thai Chicken with Basil
Tasty chicken with tumeric - forum
Macoroni mince bake
Mongolian Lamb MOTM
Banana Bread
Banana cake with frosting
Title: Re: What are your top 10 recipes?

I know you say main meals, but can I just list my favourites?

passionfruit curd
green and red shortbread - festive cookbook
smoked salmon soup (but made with fresh salmon added at the very end) - seafood cb
beef stroganoff - EDC
Nonya curry powder - Asian cb
Nonya curry chicken - Asian cb
walnut cream - Asian cb
Hainanese chicken - my own version, not the Asian cb
soft Chinese bread rolls - my own version, not the Asian cb - the Asian cb recipe has far to much liquid for the amount of flour
torte caprese
and the breads - the tm kneads dough so beautifully - there is nothing that can do such a wonderful job developing the gluten.
Title: Re: What are your top 10 recipes?
Post by: judydawn on May 04, 2011, 05:32:32 am
thermoheaven are you going to put your version of Hainanese chicken on the forum and give us your tweakings for the soft Chinese bread rolls?

I have lots of meals I love and have made several times, and I have a long list of meals I still have yet to try. I guess the ones we really enjoy so far are

TM fried rice (Forum)
Chicken Kiev (Forum)
Honey Mustard Chicken (Forum)
Gourmet Beef casserole (Forum)
Lasagna (EDC)
Beef Stroganoff (Forum)
Honey soy chicken wings (Forum)
Egg and Bacon Pie (Forum)
Steamed veggies in TM
Curried Pasta Salad

and heaps more that we have really enjoyed.
Title: Re: What are your top 10 recipes?

JD, the Hainanese chicken is just too long winded...maybe when I really haven't got anything to do.

The roll tweak is easy - just increase the second portion of bakers' flour to 500 grams.

Great thread Meagan - but or so difficult!!!!.  My list is so much easier and very minimal when it comes to the least favourite.  I think I have discovered an easy menu planner for the coming weeks - work through others favourites - thank you lovelies.  Cheers  :)  :)

I haven't gone through the book yet thermoheaven, it will be going to bed with me shortly and I'll be making a list of things I would like to try.  My homework for the night  ;D ;D  Every recipe book I own has a list inside of things I would like to do but of course I will never get around to as many as I would like. If only we were 30 years younger !!

Judy - you seem to fit 5 years of cooking experiences into 1 so you have more than 30 years of cooking time up your sleeve.  Enjoy your bedtime reading - I think I will have a closer look at FSA cookbook tonight.  :)  :)
Title: Re: What are your top 10 recipes?

I think the problem with trying to work through a cookbook is when the family requests an old favourite. It's nice getting to try a new recipe, but so often my best laid plans are derailed because old favourites are comforting.

Absolutely loving this thread. I have printed off everyones top 10 and will go through as much as I can.
What a great idea :)

Havent done many as a newbie - but I had to do bake Anzac biscuits for school, the kids were each given a biscuit and a handout with the history of the biscuit. I made 3 batches - they were very yummy.

Hmmm, top ten... That IS hard!!

Probably my favourite (because it's so easy & yummy & it's all-in-one) is my version of
Chicken & Cashews (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5335.0);
the kid's favourite would be spaghetti bolognese
(all in one with spelt spaghetti - my version, not written out - lots of veges in it)
or the Pasta Fagioli (I add tomato paste & use cannelini beans & 250g gf tortelli)
Also love
Sausage Casserole with Dumplings (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3925.0)
Warm Chicken, Pumpkin & Couscous Salad (from the Varoma demo)
Salt Cod with Tomato & Potatoes (Varoma cookbook - except I use any white fish, not smoked)
Pizzas (mine are generally dairy free & wheat/gluten free)
Pot Stickers (Asian cookbook - LOVE these! but I serve with soy sauce not Chinese vinegar)
Butter Chicken (Indian cookbook)
Mexican Quinoa (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2454.0) with Spelt Tortillas (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=1756.0)

Those are things we cook a lot, but there's lots more I cook now and then that I love too!!!  ;D

I love Hally's and others idea of using favourites as your menu plan. Unfortunately up here not everything is available (actually read that to say very little is available) so it will have to wait.

Thanks Cookie1

its a great idea to post fav recipes. I now have a few weeks of dinners without having to think :)

Our morning discussion is - What would you like for dinner? - I have told DH and DS that I have a menu plan for the week and they were very impressed. So hope it goes well.

I dont have the Indian cookbook - is the Butter chicken on the forum?

So many great dishes to choose from but this is the family's top 10 main meals so far. All can be stretched with loads of extra vegies or salad or quick bread rolls or whatever else I can think of to feed the five of us.

Spaghetti Bolognaise (EDC)
Shepherds Pie (EDC)
Lasagna (EDC)
Homemade Pizza (Dough from EDC)
Beef stew with buttermilk dumplings with loads of extra veg and fresh herbs (Budget Busters booklet)
Meatloaf (with lots of blitzed vegies) done in the oven with TMX potato mash and steamed veg (Forum)
Gourmet beef casserole (Forum)
Beef and Guinness stew (Forum)
Chicken and cashews with coconut satay sauce and coconut rice (Forum)
Baf65's Creamy chicken and vegies in the varoma (Forum)

Note to self: need to find more TMX fish dishes   :)

That is a really great way to start menu planning - list all your family's favourite meals! Here's some more ideas here on how to menu plan: http://quirkycooking.blogspot.com/p/how-to-menu-plan.html

I'm thinking of starting a link-up on my blog of Thermomix weekly menu plans - anyone interested in joining in? Gotten slack with planning, and I always do better with it if I put it in writing where I feel accountable to stick to it!!! :)

Quirky, I am interested though unsure how well I'd do at it.

As to the top 10, haven't really cooked enough to ,are that yet

Chicken in Yoghurt (Indian Cookbook)
NayNays Scones (forum)
Crispy Chilli Beef (non TMX but posted in forum)
Chocolate Ice-cream  (Tenina blog)
Thin and Crispy Pizza Dough (forum) & Pizza Sauce (forum)
Meatballs in Tomato Sauce (forum)
Garlic Steamed Rice (forum)
Poppyseed and Lemon Biscuits with Lemon Sugar (Thermovixens website)
{Edit} Minced Tart (as in meat pie, not Xmas sweet pies), - Pastry (forum) and filling (converted recipe to TMX but i haven't posted it yet, still tweaking)

Others cooked and liked but not sure they are in my top 10 yet

Honey Soy chicken (was yummy but too strong if eat more than a portion size)
Butter Chicken (first attempt was messed up due to messed up Tikka paste, cooking again tonight)
Chicken Korma (from Indian cookbook, I find it's missing something though wife loves it)
Honey Mustard Chicken (found it a little too mild/ taste not strong enough)

I have a mile long list of things to cook that would likely go into the top 10

Tarasis, I always add garlic in the honey mustard chicken and double the mustard and chuck a bit more turmeric in for more flavour.
That is one of our favourites but haven't made it for a while because my middle son doesn't like it  :(

Thanks for the tips Hools003, will give that a try. I have a similar problem to you, neither of my kids would even try it when I last cooked it (back in January, I had the left overs from it in June). Neither are into sauces ATM, so with things like Crispy Chilli beef my son will eat the Crispy Beef but not the sauce (and daughter neither bit)

DizzyGirl, try this  (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5335.0)for your first varoma meal.  It's Quirky Jo's chicken and cashew recipe.  You'll see references to it all over this forum, it is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST meal, really easy and super tasty.  I'm pretty sure it was the first meal I attempted in the varoma as well and it has never failed.  DH always asks for it and he thinks it is restaurant quality (and with my cooking, that's quite a compliment - especially seeing as his mother was a professional cook!).

For a tasty dessert, try Chookies Sweet Potato and Coconut Custards (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=7603.0).

:-* Thank you Cuilidh, it looks devine. I tried curried sausages from another forum and the sausages fell apart and was like curried mince. Not sure if it was because we use preservative free sausages. May need to do some modifications.

Going to steam fish in the varoma tonight.
