Title: Some Fish Suggestions for non-fish lovers???
Post by: KerrynN on January 06, 2011, 11:56:49 am
Hi all,

I am really trying very hard to introduce more fish into the family's diet. We have had success with salmon but that is about it. Either we just don't like white fish or I am not "doing it right".

For those of you who love fish, can you please suggest your top two or three recipes for us to try out? I am *determined* to increase our Omega3 intake!!!

Thanks,
Kerryn

Hi Kerryn. My husband and I both dislike fish but want our kids to like it, and we have found we all enjoy this recipe:

We up our omega3 intake by adding chia seeds to bread, muffins, etc. It is way higher in all omegas than fish anyway and because it's a plant=based one apparently it is absorbed into our systems better than fish-based ones (that's what I've read on many health-food sites anyway...)

My favourite fresh, white fish recipe so far is Codfish fillets with citrus butter from My Way of Cooking  (Pge 130).

I am of the belief, it is the oily fish like tuna and salmon that have your omega's in them in the higher amounts.

We add chia seeds to most things and LSA to some others like salads etc to boos our intakes.

We are all ok with fish as long as it doesn't have that strong fishy smell when you buy it.

I am really fussy with fish and so are my older kids as I grew up in Geraldton (and they started their lives there) with my Dad fishing at the Abrohlos Islands regularly and we ate pink schnapper, baldchin groper and the likes as a normal  :o :o ... oh how I wish now!!!!

Oh Kathryn my mouth is watering. We used to go to Bunbury for 2 weeks each year and Dad used to go fishing. We pigged out on dhufish. I'd love some of it now. Only 3 months until we go to Monkey Mia and we can catch some lovely fresh baldchin.

Can't understand anyone who doesn't like fish.

But, I made Teriyaki Salmon a while back in the Varoma and it tasted just like steak! So, maybe try that!

I also find that people adore Thai Fish Cakes. I use either raw or cooked fish. If raw, it needs to be slightly frozen and cut into chunks before blitzing in TMX.

Have you tried making fish fingers? Fun to make and fun to eat. Must be a recipe here somewhere. Judy????

None that I could find either on here or in Seafood Bounty Gretchen.  I just use cod fillets (or something similar, your fishmonger can advise on this), cut them into thick finger shapes, dip in egg then breadcrumbs - lovely, much better than the frozen variety from supermarkets.

My family absolutely adores salmon cakes, or as we call them, fish 'biscuits'. Anything with breadcrumbs etc to disguise fish is good.
Also, they seem to love white fish filets done in the varoma but i steam them in foil parcels with soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic and ginger and they dont taste fishy at all. i also do a variation of fish fingers but using almond meal as the crumb rather than breadcrumbs as I am coeliac. I also use gluten free bread and make my own breadcrumbs from this in the thermie. If I cut up white fish fillets into small (bite size) pieces, crumb them and then oven bake them, especially with sweet chilli or tomato sauce, the kids gobble them up. Home made fish fingers/nuggets etc taste much better than shop bought and you can also season the crumbing mix the way your family likes eg paprika, fresh herbs eg I use a lot of dill/ parsley, peri-peri sprinkle, whatever! i tend to use blue grenadier fillets or basa, whatever the fish shop has on special. For my fish cakes, i just use good old canned red or pink salmon.

Well tonight we tried Basa nuggets. The kids were happy with them but DH and I found them rather tasteless. Still, as the kids liked them we would do these again.

Thanks for the idea.
