Title: Notes from an insomniac
Post by: Cuilidh on September 29, 2011, 07:39:42 pm
.... is there anyone out there?  It looks like I'm the only one 'on board' just now.

I've been awake since 2.00 am and finally gave up trying to sleep so decided to catch up with my forum family - sure there would be someone else up and about just now, but it's now 4.30 am and I'm all alone!!!!!  Everyone in the UK and Europe must be at work.

Hi Fundj - I've got a flat out 9 hour day at work to get through yet (but I've got three hours to fill in until then!.  If I manage to look pathetic enough, maybe I'll be able to persuade my staff to let me have a "nanna nap" at some time during the afternoon!

I'm here but for me it is 1:42 P.M.  in California.

There was a time when my friend in Mt. Dandenong and I had to work out a phone signal (back in the old days before answering machines and way before the internet) so neither of us would be phoning at an odd hour.

In 1981 she didn't mind me waking her at some ungodly hour to tell her I had won the Basenji national specialty with the daughter of a bitch I had imported from her.  There are quite a number of champions that go back to that Aussie girl.

I guess I'm about 30 years too late with my congratulations, Andie, but there are some times when it is perfectly excusable to wake people up in the middle of the night to tell them their news!

Unfortunately, all our family are in Scotland so phone calls in the middle of the night are invariably bad news for us - except at Hogmanay when we can't understand what they are saying because they have been indulging in too much good cheer for a great many hours!

I do occasionally have bouts of insomnia but as I always have something to read or something I want to do, I never let it worry me and it will pass after a day or so.
Cleaning the fridge is a great way to pass the time without having to do a lot of thinking.

I've never been bothered by caffeine.  I can drink coffee late in the evening and sleep like a baby.  In fact, sometimes a cup of milky coffee is just the thing to put me in the mood to sleep.
I think my chemical make up is somewhat skewed but I have friends who are the same way - late dinner, two or three cups of espresso and no problems sleeping.
Other can't have any caffeine after ten a.m. or they can't sleep at all.

Occasionally I resort to a cup of chamomile tea if I am looking forward to getting up early and driving someplace.

My yoga teacher mentioned a few poses are good to do if you're awake in the middle of the night.  If you're interested google yoga poses for insomnia and good luck.

Thanks, Vivaroo, I think I will do that.

I've now passed enough time to head to the shower, make breakfast and get ready for work - whooppee!

Have a great day Marina you have experienced much of it already.  Certainly I can so walk in your shoes with regards insomnia, often Frozzie or CC's little green beacon has been a saviour at those times, the moorning light always help you feel so alive though!!!!!  Hopefully Melb weather will provide sunshine and smiles for you.

Thanks everyone.  I am now back at my desk hard at work - only 9 hours to go till I can call it a day (and fall asleep in front of the telly, just like my dad used to do - and I could never understand how or why he did it!).

PS  So far, Melbourne's weather is good, but I have no hope of it lasting - it's been pretty awful down here these past couple of days.

I have been experiencing a bit of this myself lately Marina - most of the time it is when I have food on my mind so I blame the Thermomix completely  :D :D :D  If I read the paper before turning the light off I seem to be OK but reading a recipe book often has a different outcome - I wake up an hour after I've gone to sleep.  Better start looking at the recipe books during the day I think and see if my theory is correct.

Don't worry about being awake - just go with it and enjoy the time, is my motto.

I go to the toilet, blow my nose, have a drink of water, read my Kindle (has a light) and then my eyes get tired and I go back to sleep. I would never consider doing housework tho (yuk)

You poor ladies that have trouble sleeping. Thank goodness I don't generally have that trouble at all. Occasionally if I have something on my mind (often food as Judy said) I can't get to sleep. I have a friend who does exactly as CP does. She actually turns the light on and reads. Her DH decided he would rather get used to the light than wonder what she was doing up and about. I'll have to suggest an ereader with a light for her birthday. I found mine wonderful for in the van and especially bush camps as I could read and everyone else was in the dark!!!

I think we all have night where we can't sleep properly.  Marina, have you tried munching on some goji berries in the evening?- supposed to help you relax according to my Chinese greengrocer.

A couple of drops of Lavender Oil on your pillow either side, or pour drops into the bath.  This sends my Husband out like a light, doesn't work for me, but worth a try maybe, just a thought, and if it doesn't work you can put it in the tumble dryer or the vac to make everything smell nice.

I have to say if I can't sleep I get up have a coffee and a cig, and go back to bed again, I know it's not fair.

CP, I did all those things you suggested (except the nose blow and the housework!), unfortunately it didn't work this time.  I always manage to sleep for the first 3 or so hours at night, but after that things get a bit rocky.  I guess it's really stress - self employed, etc., doesn't help.

One of my colleagues is an acupuncturist so she has shown me a couple of points I can massage which may help me to sleep - although I don't think I'll need them tonight as I have several hours'sleep to catch up on!

If you find lavendar oil too potent put some pieces of lavendar under your pillow, or use a lavendar show gel or moisturiser.

Thanks Penji and Cookie, I think I've got some lavendar oil around here somewhere that I can use - better not dig it out yet or I'll be asleep (I HOPE) before I finish work.

I have never slept well since having my 2 children.  40 years. :o :o :o  I now just reach for my iPad and read.  Best reading matter is a good murder / mystery.   Nothing to do will children.  Sometimes I look at recipes,  if I find a good one I send it to my other computer and then print it off when I get up.  It is nice to know that others have the same problem.

hi Cuilidh, just thought I would give you something to read if you wake up tonight as not as many people post during the night...just remember you sleep when you're dead, so thats why I believe you should enjoy the extra time you get awake (that sounds pretty gruesome doesn't it?? so I hope it doesn't give you nightmares when you nod back off). Also I remember reading somewhere to have a warm shower before going to bed as that puts you in the sleeping mode. I reckon tonight though you will sleep like a baby.

I too am self-employed and I used to try and stop myself from thinking about what I had to do the next day, what I hadn't done, what others hadn't done, how to increase business, etc and I have found my Kindle to be a blessing that it does take my mind of all that rubbish that was crowding my head at ungodly hours.

CP I wish that I was in the land of nod at the mo!!!! Instead I am frustrated by the slowness of the forum, I hope that I have not developed Chelsea's forum issues, each page is taking forever to open and also move through the threads on each page, perhaps it is a sign that I should go to bed  ???

no, it seems to be slow where I am too. I do think its a sign to go to bed though. I went to the movies tonight with my sister and a friend, and then we went out to dinner but I just had to check the forum one last time...

Forum is its usual efficient self here.

It seems there are a few insomniacs about tonight :) I have been trying to catch up on my forum reading and OMG it's now 1.04am :o :o :o. It is my imagination or is there lots more chatter now?

I recently listened to a fascinating discussion on the radio about our body clocks. If I remember correctly, to reset your body clock (and get a good night's sleep), go out early each morning in the bright light (no sunnies) and get some exercise, then go about your day. Apparently takes a little while to work but is very effective :) :). I definitely need the exercise so I think I'll give it a go.

Thanks for your words of wisdom, CP63 - it does put things in a different light (after all, you are a long time dead) and, djinni373 you are right, there is heaps more traffic on this forum now than earlier times.  It's a reflection on how our membership is growing (and how much time we all spend chatting to each other).  Like lots of others, my kindle is a huge help - but you've got to have the right reading book - I'm reading Jane Austen's Mansfield Park just now and, although I am enjoying it, you do have to concentrate just a bit harder on it as it is written in the English of her century, which differs from modern English so it wasn't the best choice for my sleepless night - must download some easy reading / mind numbing novels for those nights.

Glad to say I managed to stay awake until 10.00 last night and was out like a light until 5.30 am this morning, so I'm getting back to normal.  Daylight saving starts tonight so I guess I could say (if today was tomorrow, if you get what I mean), that I slept until 6.30 am, which is really late for me!

I've really loved all your responses to my thread, thank you all so much and I hope other insomniacs get some ideas from it.
