We are off to Singapore in 11 days (who's counting?) and I was wondering if we can use the ipad there. If so do we have to do anything specific please? Thanks ipad specialists. :-*
-
Yes youbcan, i used mine in hawaii & bali. Dont use 3g unless you really have too, will cost a fortune.
Try & log on to a free wifi place.
Love singapore, where are you staying.

Grand Hyatt in Scott's Road. Very close to the best shopping and it is lovely there. The breakfasts last you most of the day. Last year we were upgraded (we always stay there) and had free cocktails etc in their club.
-
We stayed at the St. Regis. Orchard Rd. If your there on a sunday they do the most amazing brunch.
Enjoy

If you have the wifi only ipad see if your hotel has wifi (you might need to pay for it in blocks ie 1 hour etc)- definitely dont use 3G if your ipad is 3G capable- even with international roaming enabled on your plan it will be hideously expensive unless you have pre-purchased a data pack with your provider. As mentioned, try to research free wifi locations and use those although they are not always very secure ie they are easier to hack than a dedicated broadband connection. If you do have a 3G ipad, make sure you go into settings and turn off data roaming and 3G before you go and just have wifi turned on and it will austomatically seek out any wifi locations in the vicinity. If your hotel has wifi capability, as mentioned, they will often give you a specific password for a fee- some charge up to $20-30 dollars equivalent for say 2.5 hours internet time.

Me too Cookie! I'm going to Singapore in 17 days for my honeymoon! Whoop whoop. (i'm terribly excited as i have never been there). I don't have a sim card for my ipad so only ever use it where there is free wi-fi. I used it in Bali last year no problems. Most hotels these days have free wi-fi albeit a bit slow but better to be connected slowly then not at all! Have a fab time.
-
Congratulations Lisaarnold. Where are you staying? Even though we don't know each other I'll smile at all the honeymooning couples.
-
Thanks Cookie. After 9 years of waiting though its mearly a piece of paper and a diamond :) We are staying at the Marina Bay sands the frist 3 nights (any excuse to splash out on a flashy hotel lol) and the remaining 7 nights at Grand Park Orchard on Orchard Road. Think i'm more excited about the honey moon than I am the wedding! :)
-
That will be lovely for you. There is so much to do up there. We even like walking in the rain as it is warm. Have a lovely wedding and a fantastic honeymoon. I'm going up with DD and DH stays home. DD shops and I carry the parcels.
-
Cookie, have a great time. When we go to a new country we head straight to the Apple shop , and look pathetic. (not hard). The lovely young people always help us set us a system that is cheap and we can cope with. We love our iPads to travel with.
Lisaarnold, have a wonderful time, and congratulations.
-
Thanks Chookie. I can easily do that.
-
Cookie, carry a TMX bag and Lisa might bump into you ;D Have a great holiday both of you and have a lovely wedding day Lisa - photo please. I don't recall us having a wedding on here yet, lots of babies though ;)
-
How exciting Cookie. Hope you have a wonderful, happy time. :D
-
cookie have a great holiday with your daughter
lisaaronald enjoy your honeymoon
-
Have a fabulous time Cookie :)
Congratulations Lisaarnold on your forthcoming wedding and enjoy your honeymoon in Singapore ;D
-
I was just going to add that if you want 3G most countries have a cheap prepaid that you can purchase. We do exactly the same for our phones when we go to Bali. Costs us about 70c a text from Bali on our phones with global roaming and can buy a SIM over there and send them for less than 1 cent!! Happy Holidays to you both :-* :-*
-
How wonderful for both of you girls going to Singapore, one of my favourite places. You will find free Wi Fi everywhere. Be sure to take a suitable adaptor though most hotels supply them.

Enjoy cookie! And Lisaarnold! ;D ;D
-
We were in Singapore last year and bought a sim card for the 3 days from Singtel. It was brilliant to have acccess to maps and google wherever we were.
Have fun
-
Was the sim card for the ipad c2jm? That would be good.
-
Thanks everyone for the wishes. Will definitely upload a photo when we get back :)
-
Yes it was for the ipad and they have plans based on the number of days, 3 days suited us perfectly, I think it was 15 Singapore Dolllars. Enjoy
-
Thanks.

I'm just in Langkawi, Malaysia, right now in my hotel room searching the forum on my iPad with the wifi connection. We had the best satay last night and some fresh fish from the front of the restaurant ( in a giant ice display) that you choose and they cook for you anyway you like with whatever sauce you choose. We also had gai larn with chillies (blow your head off strength!) and salted fish. I love all the hawker places and am inspired to get all my Asian cookbooks out again when we're back. Truly amazing place!!!
-
Merlin I am seriously jealous. Enjoy!

-
Oooo have fun cookie and dd...
Merlin my parents loved malaysia ans said it is still true to itself and not like alot of the other asian countriescthat have dramatically changed in the last couple of years to suit the western traveller..
-
Thanks Judy and everyone. I'm all packed now and the washing, ironing and cleaning are all up to date. Will have a nice nap on the plane going up. A little glass of wine and I'll sleep.
-
That's good to hear about Malaysia, Frozzie.Apart from being so lush and literally driving around near rice paddies, rubber tree plantations and amazing scenery, the people here have been always friendly and helpful, especially when it comes to pointing out the best places to eat! ( local knowledge goes a long way!) I have had the best beef rendang, Laksa, nasi goreng as well as numerous other dishes- my favourite was a squid cooked in sambal - amazing! I definitely want to come back- I just need to get used to the humidity. I cant even begin to think how many litres of water I have been drinking every day to compensate for the heat and humidity. I thnk anyone who comes here will be truly awestruck.
-
Merlin it sounds jut like Cairns without the good food. LOL! The locals here are pretty friendly too.
Malaysia has come a long way and KL rivals Singapore for shopping theses days. Beautiful country and am happy you are having a great time.
Gert in Cairns with no rendang.

Thanks to everyone we have been able to get a sim for the iPad from Singtel for 13 dollars and we have free unlimited Internet dot .3 days.
W e tried to get a prepaid for our phone so we could have free calls back to Australia but both our phones are locked to Telstra.
Instead we bought a cheap phone and have put a Starhub per paid into it and have free calls to home as long as it is a landline. After 5 SMS we get 50 free SMS all for $15. We are impressed. The speed for the Internet here is wonderful. Leaves home for dead.
-
cookie1 that is great. Take a pic or two with your iPad and tapatalk them onto the forum. I found the Internet speed in the depths of the Cambodian Jungles faster than Au. LOL!
Have fun.

Nice to hear you are able to keep in touch easily with home Cookie - enjoy your holiday now the electronic gear is sorted and working. :-*
-
Have a wonderful, safe holiday Cookie. Looking forward to hearing about it when you get back. ;D
-
Well, I am finally back from Malaysia- had a lovely time. It was great to still read the forum on my iPad when I was over there, somehow very comforting!! I must say that apart from the weather being much cooler here and the fact that our plane had to change the flight path due to the cyclone over WA ie incredible tailwinds, I would have loved to stay longer. Malaysia is truly a spectacular country and I can't rave enough about it!
-
Welcome home merlin. Glad you had a good time.
Gert
