Title: Hedgehog slice (Warthog slice as DS5 calls it)
Post by: dede on April 10, 2012, 06:32:22 am
These are so nice, my DS 5 couldn't remember the name and called them Warthog slice, so that's what we call them now :)

Ingredients
250 g Scotch finger biscuits
1/2 Cup desiccated coconut
1/2 Cup castor sugar
1/2 Cup Cocoa powder
100 g Dark chocolate, chopped
100 g Butter
1 Tbs golden syrup
1 eggs, beaten
CHOCOLATE TOPPING
200 g Dark chocolate, chopped
50 g butter, chopped

Directions
Lightly grease an 18cm x 23cm slice pan, line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above pan edge.
Place biscuits in a bag and lightly break them up with a rolling pin ( not to fine, you want chunks still)
In TM place chocolate, butter and syrup. Heat 3 minutes 60c speed 3, until all melted and smooth.
Whisk in egg, add crushed biscuits, coconut, sugar and cocoa.
Mix 10 sec reverse speed 3. If not completely mixed then mix remainder with spatula.
Press mixture into prepared pan and chill 30 min until firm
Combine chocolate and butter in heat proof bowl and heat in microwave until melted
Pour chocolate over slice and chill until set but not to firm before slicing into squares.

JuliaC83 - Made this with dark chocolate and took some to share at a picnic. I only had 100g choc left for the icing so added 1 cup icing sugar and a little hot water to increase to the desired amount.

Suzanne - omitted the egg altogether, works well without it.

Oh Dede wonderful memories of buying a bit of slice on the shopping run when my kids were little then trying to nibble it for afternoon tea without them seeing it ( I'm not a mean mum, just tried not to give littlies too much sugar  - and by Friday shopping day I needed a treat!)

Now I'll have to cook a larger bit and share it with them (now aged 23, 21 and 18). Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Oh that's 23, 21 and 18 (not 1- too much of an age gap!)

Bonsai I was about to comment on the huge age gap and how game you were to go back again lol.

Sort of like shortbread, there is a recipe here to make "not quite a scotch finger" you could make them.

Thank you Dede, will make on the weekend.  My husband LOVES hedgehog slice and the ony tmx recipe I have tried was very nice but more like rocky road, than hedgehog.

Love the warthog thing, too!  My son, now 17, used to have real problems with his speech and pronounced "noodles" more like "needles" . . . one night my daughter asked him if he knew what was for dinner and she thought he said "needles and beachballs".  We still call spaghetti and meatballs that now!!

Dede, it might be a few months of no sleep, so please help me  :D Where do I add the egg in?

Lol Lelly, love Needles and beach balls. Will have to remember that.
DS asked me one day if I could make some warthog slice, took me awhile to click what he meant. When I worked it out I laughed so much DS got real grumpy with me (he hates people laughing at him)

Reminds me when DS 14 was about 4 and we were talking about going to Ben Lomond to see the snow (near Launceston)
He said there was no way he was going there because we might die. After a bit of thought and working it out we realized he thought we were talking about Bin Laden (this was when it was all on the tv and everyone was talking about it)
Poor kid thinking we were going to put his life in danger. But we couldn't help but laugh. :)

Same question as lee, when do you add the egg?

I'd put it in with the chocolate, butter and syrup.
