Made this today in the hope of finding a recipe where the mixture of the mince is still good.
I used 500g mince & not the beef steak & pork fillet as in the recipe. I Omitted the star anise & the orange rind, I wanted to try & make it as close to regular bolognaise as I could.
This worked out well, the quantties are great as it makes a full TM bowl full of sauce.
The texture of the mince has been the best to date with many attempts to make bolognaise sauce.
It took about 45 mins to cook, mince added towards the end.
Next time I woud add fresh herbs, but all in all a winner for an easy bolognaise sauce.
I dont think I will ever find one that is as good as stove top or slow cooking.
I will certainly be making this again.
Easy. Recommend you give it go :)

Where is this recipe from Hally (I'm guessing it's a book I don't have :( )
-
I've added it to Hally's review Mandi - In the Mix.
-
Thank Judy, I though it would be a book I don't have. Although my sister has it, might see if I can borrow it :)

I've made this one as well- the first time I did it exactly as written and didn't like the star anise flavour at all- in fact I thought it a somewhat strange ingredient for bolognese. My family still ate it. I have made it since without the star anise and the next time adding a small amount of lemon peel which is the way my mum used to make it- I actually think the lemon adds to the flavour enormously. Overall it is a great recipe - were it not for the star anise I would give it 5/5 but I give it 4.5/5. I definitely don't prefer the star anise in this one e en though I use it in a lot of other recipes, usually Asian dishes,

Thanks Hally ;)

Merlin, yes I think its a good recipe to have. I love the way it makes so much with 500g meat. What meat do you use? Might try the lemon next time.
I looked at this book & thought it wasnt really kid friendly, however this recipe is good.
Any other family friendly meals in the book?

Hally- I have to admit that the only one I have only done out of this book is the spag bol for the kids - the rest that I have done seem more dinner partyish to me. Is there such a word?
In terms of the meat I always use half veal mince/ half pork mince.
-
Yes thats what I thought. Which is why I ddnt buy it. We dont have dinner parties, we do bbqs in the summer & bring a dish in the winter. Normally something kids will eat as we all have little kids.
It is nice though to make other food, but that for us is normally spicy food.
I do love the way it makes so much sauce, i love to have individual portions in the freezer for ds when we are having spicy food. I freeze it with the spaghetti, easy quick meal for ds.
I will try the meat in the recipe but had the beef mince out & it worked well.

I agree Hally. I didn't buy the book as DS is a fussy eater and we don't entertain much as we live too far away from our town friends.
-
Well I'm glad I didn't buy it either. Will borrow from my sister for a squiz :)

Anytime you would like to send me a PM too I would love to hear from you Hally. ;) :)

I have added 2 tsp of catamelised garlic paste to this. Also added, parsley, oregano & basil from the garden
Tossed it through my wok, added all sauce. DEVINE
Serving it with home made fettucini & shaved parmesan on top.
Top Restaurant Quality.

This (http://thermomixer.wordpress.com/2012/01/27/dani-valents-spaghetti-bolognaise/) must be Dani's Spaghetti Bolognaise recipe from In the Mix. I don't know if it is word for word or not.

Well done JD, great finding. ;D :P
Yes it looks like it.

I made this today using Hally's tweaks and adding the lemon zest instead of orange zest as Merlin suggested. This is for tomorrow's lunch so will probably develop even more flavour by then but just having a few spoonfuls, I am very happy with this. The colour too is something I have not been able to achieve with TMX spag bol sauce before either. This lot is for the freezer - as the others have said, it makes heaps. I did use the pork fillet and the rump steak - very expensive sauce for a 3.5 year old visitor tomorrow ;)
-
It looks just like mine, but I used beef mince as that was what I had defrosted.
It tastes fantastic with home made pasta.
I am happy with this recipe too.

Judy, I haven't tried it with orange zest yet. I normally put a whole 3-4 cm long piece of lemon peel and then take it out at the end. I'm open to trying orange p eel if anyone has had a go with it previously.
-
Looks good JD. I bet your GS will eat every bit ;D
-
I am making this today using the pork fillet & steak. Interested to see what the difference will be of course the meat is of a higher quality.
Will report back
H :)
Using the more expensive cuts of meat, I really couldnt tell the difference it tastes just as good both ways. I have only tried a spoonful & not with pasta but In future happy to make with good old mince.
I have just put this into 3 containers for the freezer (sigh). It is a really good meal for a large family or gathering.

Had this tonight. Cooked as per recipe. I loved it 5/5 easily. Love the orange and star anise flavors! Very nice. Kids gobbled it up too!
-
We love this version in our house - it has replaced our traditional recipe. The star anise and orange flavours are subtle, but give it a really nice lift. It a nice change from the overly tomato flavoured versions that most people do.
We use beef too. DD2 loves it!

Bambi & LYW glad you enjoyed, I make it regularly & using the mince it is such a cheap meal.

Halex, I love your interpretation of this recipe...carmelised garlic paste and fresh herbs as an inclusion sounds lovely!
I cooked this for the first time tonight.
The smell in the house while cooking the pasta sauce was really amazing! I loved the flavour and I love the idea of sneaking in so many vegetables. I followed the recipe to the 'T' and personally I enjoyed the inclusion of orange zest and star anise, my kiddos were a little unsure to begin with.
While the meal was a success and all plates clean...I may experiment halving the star anise and orange. All in all a nice 'twist' on a standard family meal. BTW..I would say its the nicest bolognese I have made in my TMX.

Katen-F thank you.
Looks good, ths is the best bol sauce in my opinion that you can make in the TM & it makes heaps ;D

Made this tonight and we thought it was great. Pre TMX, we ate spag bol lots but I've kept putting off making it in the TMX because I didn't want to be disappointed! I mentally prepared myself that it would be different to the spag bol my family usually have and I think that helped!
I also used pre-minced beef as it is what I had at home and found the texture to be great.
We will certainly be having this (or a version of) regularly.
-
I made this tonight - YUM! I only added one star anise, and instead of zucchini I added some chunks of pumpkin that needed using up. This will be my number one bolognese recipe from now on ;D ;D
-
We eat spag bol all the time but I haven't had success converting my stove top recipe. Must try this but am sceptical that it will be too runny.
-
That looks delish Amy! It's my favourite spag bol sauce too :)

I think the trick with this one is to not call it spag bol...because the orange & star anise give it a different flavour to what many people are used to, and can give people a bit of a shock at first-they'll forget about the thin sauce!

Lol Thanks for the tip jamberie ;)

Jam has a good point Kimmy, but I just added some cornflour to thicken mine ;)
Thanks Jam :D
