This is an interesting recipe with a mild flavour. Not too much meat, in fact I would probably be inclined to add a little more if we were all going to be home. We enjoyed it, and it's a good way to get some sauerkraut into you!! It fed 4 adults and 2 kids last night :)
We also loved the steamed dumpling and I have enjoyed the leftover dumpling sliced and toasted this morning :) it nearly filled the varoma bowl :D
This is one that I would remake again (though I don't remake many recipes ... there are too many new ones to try!!)

I've never bought sauerkraut Kathryn, how did you buy it - canned or how does it come? Could you just use plain cabbage?
-
You can buy it in cans or in packets. The cans are in the supermarket and the stuff in packets is usually in the refrigerated section of supermarkets or good delis.
-
I've bought it in cans - Edgell makes one and also at the Deli in jars.
My SIL, doctors a can up with bacon etc which reminds her of her mum and granny's homemade one in Croatia.
At the farmers market we can buy it fresh from Oma's Kitchen, a German providore.

Thanks girls. I have never tried it but it's just one of those things I think I wouldn't like :-))
-
JD, sorry to disagree but a) I have a German background so genetically I love sauerkraut and b) it tastes amazing with any kind of pork. If sauerkraut doesn't take your fancy you could use the red cabbage version instead. Much sweeter and also delicious.

Merlin, way back I have German ancestors but that doesn't mean I have to like the same food as they did :D :D :D I am my own person with my own likes and dislikes and for some reason (maybe I saw a recipe) I feel as if it will be bitter. Sweet is good, bitter not so good.
Kathryn, what did you use - the genuine article?
-
No offence JD- I was just being tongue in cheek- just letting off some steam after my kids have been sick all week and are finally better now. There's plenty of German things I dislike as well!!!!
-
No offence taken Merlin - how boring it would be if we all liked or disliked the same things.
-
I used the canned JD and rinsed it before I used it. I had a choice of 2 - one had preservatives in it the other didn't ;)
You honestly can't taste it. Think you would be surprised JD :)
-
Rinsing it sounds a good idea Kathryn. Ok, I will try it.

Just make half JD and you will only need one small can of sauerkraut (I think it is edgell)
