Yesterday I tipped a large bag of raw turkey bones into the SC. Added garlic , ginger and water. Cooked for several hours. Strained broth and delivered it to DD who is in bed with nasty bug.

I’ve managed to get a me day. It’s a very frosty morning. When it warms up I’ll plant some Snow Pea seedings, make a couple of chicken and mushroom pies and do some washing. Read my book for book club.

Of course you have a brain Cookie. You talk here nearly every day. It’s the other stuff that might be there also . I think like this. I’m 86 and if there is something else there, it’s going to take about 10 years to get really nasty. At 96 I don’t think I’ll care.
30+ years ago I had a vertigo episode. I went through the same tests that you are having. I’ve had 2 attacks since. I now carry Stemetil tablets, ( Dr advice). One tablet usually stops it. I’ve learned to recognise feeling a bit unstable. This for me is the first sign. Today I’m going out for lunch with Probus. I’m official photographer for the event. 9

Simple Nachos in AF. I received my box of mixed fruit and veggies from Wilsons. $40. It contained 6 bananas. I can’t eat all of these as they are high in potassium. I’ll make a Rum and Raisin Banana cake to give away.

Cookie, the quality and variety of food that you prepare is far superior to what you would experience in most restaurants. I like to eat out , just to see what is the latest thing in vogue. I’m very critical and mostly disappointed. Occasionally I find a really good cafe or restaurant and love the experience. If it’s an open kitchen I locate the chef and tell them that I’ve enjoyed their cooking. They are always delighted with the feed back.
Recently excellent meal. seafood chowder at a pub in Creswick. 13

Marina, Ha, had a lot of trouble with the accent to start with but I seemed to get used to it as we went along. It was very broad. She also talked very fast. The husband had grown up in Ireland and started secondary school in Glasgow and his accent wasn’t as extreme.
Considering more about the Ghan, I’m not complaining about the Ghan in general, nor were the more experienced travellers. I know I’m pretty critical when it comes to food and was expecting a higher standard as everyone I spoke to prior to trip raved about the food. Jane is a lovely person. My GD and DD waited with me in the Ghan reception room ready to board the train. GD is just finishing a degree in Botany at La Trobe Uni and they clicked immediately. Jane trained as a teacher initially. Back to Tai Chi today. Spent day in garden yesterday and more today. 14

Marina, the Ghan is certainly a once in a lifetime time experience. I’m glad that I did it. It is physically fairly demanding. Getting on and off the train isn’t easy. Very limited luggage is allowed. There is nowhere to store anything other than a small bag in the cabin. I managed to upgrade to a top ( platinum) cabin and this was about double the size of Gold Double. There was a lot of winging about the cabins. I’m glad I wasn’t sharing. I understand that the cabins are being upgraded next year. It was suggested that a bank loan would be necessary! If you are considering it, do it sooner rather than later.
In the end , it was the people who make the trip. Travelled for 3 weeks with a lovely couple from Glasgow and Jane Edmenson ( Gardening Australia) was good company on the Ghan. 15

I’ve been eating Chow Mien and Pea and Ham soup for several days. Time for a change. Kangaroo in Stout from the freezer. ?
Do you good Forum people realise just how well we eat ? I have just read an article in the Age about travelling on the Ghan. Which is what I’ve just done. They mention the outstanding food. This was not my experience. Although the options were amazing for a train, the actual dishes weren’t in my opinion all that good. One of the sweets sounded great but was a 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt with a spoonful of berry compote on top. Then a Salmon fillet not properly trimmed. Had cartilage attached. Also beef fillet with gristle on the edge. The service however was excellent as was the 6 am experience off the train to watch the sunrise over the dessert. Egg and Bacon rolls and hot tea and coffee were served to keep the 2 degree chill away. |
