Its a toy so you shouldn't expect it to do the same things as a real one. Honestly do some parents think a toy really does the same as as real one? A toy car does not have the same functions as a real one and neither does a doll or action figure… Our kids have one and it gets used all the time when playing cooking which is great way to introduce the love of cooking and food. They use the real one too when they are helping in the kitchen.

best way to keep an eye on how much electricity you are using is to buy a smart meter which attaches to your input supply and lets you see how much is actually being used even when you think everything is off. EG leaving TV on standby is not much different than when it is actually on and you are watching it, leaving lights on etc. I have just done a huge refurb on our kitchen, changed all the lights to LED bulbs, now have more light but the total use if they are all on is less than 40w, previously there were two tubes plus under unit lights etc. I dont think actual cooking in the TM would push your bill up, we take ours camping and often have a limited supply rating of 6 amps which we have run the fridge, kettle and TM plus anything we have on charge.

Ok to answer the questions and provide some more facts.... - to stop any energy being used at all you have to turn the TM off at the wall outlet or unplug
the sleep button on the TM does not turn the machine off only wakes it from sleep or changes the state from weighing to time
by experiment with an energy meter in normal ready to cook/work mode the TM is drawing 5 watts of electricity in sleep mode it is drawing about 3 watts of electricity which means in 33.3 hours of standby mode it has consumed 1k of electricity.

Did you know that even when your TM has gone to sleep(standby mode screen gone blank) it is still using electricity? It certainly does. This might be obvious to some but not others. It is good practice to unplug after use any way but also this will save you money. The question I have is why hasn't Vorverk put an on off control? In this day and age where we should be saving energy and the continuous comments from sales that the TM saves money from the food budget...............

Tim - that's interesting that the UK book says only 500ml/g of water as the aussie EDC says for cooking rice (basmati or jasmine) use 400g rice (can reduce qty to suit) and 900g water, 13-16min varoma speed 4. That's seems a big variation in water doesn't it. My EDC is July 2010 version, I wonder if anyone has a newer one that they could tell us if the instructions differ? What speed does it say in that book Tim?
I did cook plain rice tonight; approx. 320g with 890g water for 13 min. With 4.5 min left on the clock it started it's spurting out the mc hole so I tried upping the speed a little which seemed a bit out of control and didn't seem to stop the spurting. I turned it off for a minute to get my bearings then angled the mc and continued cooking at sp4 and a half. It didn't bubble out the top - it stayed just under the mc and the rice was cooked fine.
Another question for Tim - what are the cooking instructions in your EDC for custard? Mine is 7 min at 90 degrees on sp4.
Ok just checked the book to see what it says compared with what I actually do...... 400g rice in basket with 1 lt water 5 seconds on 5 to wash the rice then 20 min varoma at 2.5 measure cup up in bubbles reach cup turn speed up to 4. custard: 7 min 80 sp 4

Hi Alyce, any chance it will be available outside of Australia store? I'm in Indonesia. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the interest from Indonesia! We do hope one day to be distributing hard copies of our books over there, but for the moment the cost is shipping is prohibitively expensive I apologize
Regarding the iBook format, I actually prefer this format over the format of QFITT iBook because it does look exactly like the hard copy (which was the intention!). Obviously though there are many different opinions on this and we will certainly take all on board when producing our next book
So glad to hear people are enjoying the recipes! Cheers, alyce
Just out of interest, why the pop corn? I cite this as the only thing you cant cook in the TM when asked!

Wonder it certainly does have a strange format and it will be a conversion direct from the printed version for use on e readers. Recipes are good but I agree with the your comments.
