I wasn't sure where the best place to post this was. Does anyone know if we can get wholemeal pastry flour here? It's lighter, like pastry/cake flour.

I did read that you could grind regular wholemeal flour in a blender, so I thought Thermomix, but I wasn't sure if we could actually buy it here.

Vegetarian / Re: Refried beans -how to convert for Tmx?

Thank Judy. I normally do a search beforehand but didn't this time. I did remind me about my pressure cooker so I was able to cook the beans in a fraction of the time.

I was going to try what Judy suggested. I'm fairly certain corn flour etc is only added to keep it from clumping.

Vegetarian / Refried beans -how to convert for Tmx?
« on: July 29, 2012, 12:30:18 pm »
Can anyone tell me how I'd convert this slow cooker recipe to the Thermomix?

1 onion, peeled and halved
2 cups dry pinto beans, rinsed
1/2 fresh jalapeņo or other hot pepper, seeded and chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4t salt
One big pinch cumin
6 cups water

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker and cook on high for 8 hours. Remove larger onion chunks and drain excess liquid. Reserve some excess liquid to use to give desired consistency. Mash remaining with potato masher adding reserved liquid as necessary.

I'm soaking the beans overnight as I want to use my slow cooker for something else, how long would I cook the soaked beans for and what temp and speed? Thank you!

Thanks everyone! After I posted I realised my subject heading was a bit strange :o

Gert, I am very close to Peters of Kensington - I could walk there if I wanted to. It seems like every time I go past it's closed but I hope to make it there soon.

Introduce Yourself / Hello from a recent Sydney Transplant :)

HI I'm Beth and I moved to Sydney about 6 months ago from Brisbane. I'm originally from Chicago and moved to Australia for what was supposed to be 2-3 yrs with my dh for work. We were in Canberra for 4 years before moving to Brisbane for 8 1/2 yrs and then to Sydney. I like Sydney but I'm really missing Brisbane!

I first heard about the Thermomix about 2 yrs ago when I was talking to a friend about a pressure cooker that I got for Mother's Day (I seem to ask for and get appliances for the different holidays  :D ). I'd never heard of it before but a friend said they were all the rage in Perth. Fast forward to last winter when I friend got one for her birthday and I knew I wanted one for myself. I'd told my dh that if we had to move to Sydney he was buying me one since I surely would have a tiny kitchen and well, I ended up with both!

I'm really enjoying it and have used it to make all sorts of things and my dh and 2 girls are both starting to use it which is nice.

Suggestions and Complaints / Re: Scales don't function properly

I've had the same problem as well. Mostly when I try to measure very small amounts. I have mine on an island type bench so I wonder if that's the problem. I've made sure that the feet are clean etc and no cords are in the way so I'm not sure what's going on. I'll have to try it on the actual kitchen bench. It's frustrating because it doesn't happen every single time.

Recipe Book Recipe Reviews / Re: The Best of our Recipe Communities

I received this book for having a demo and purchasing. I'm pretty disappointed not much appeals out of it! Anyone else?

I'm the same as you. It was the May gift for buying a Thermomix. I've looked through it a few times and there really isn't anything that appeals to me.

Part of me thinks it's the photos. They aren't very appealing and most of the contributors (aside from the Aussie ones) look terrified. Seriously.
