Muntries?
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:33:04 am »
Hi all, I guess this question is probably aimed at our SA forum members as I think Muntries are native to that area.

I would like to make Andrew Fielke's Wattle Seed Walnut Fruit Mince Tarts for christmas but the recipe calls for Muntries.  Are they readily available at this time of year?  If so, where would I source some from?  The  recipe does say that they can be substituted with some diced apple but will this alter the taste considerably?  I really like the idea of using native Australian ingredients.  Really interested in your thoughts....

Thanks  :)

I've never heard of them before, but they are grown in SA.  From what I have found on the net, they are ripe in Feb-March.  I found a couple of online "bush tucker" shops, but they only sell them in sauces and chutneys.  The one place that did sell them frozen was out of stock.  Sorry - cant help!

Thanks Karen and JD, My search hasn't produced much more information.  I have found a supplier in QLD for the frozen berries but I don't think I need 1kg of them and shipping could be a problem.

I think I will go ahead and make the mince tarts but just substitute apple.

If I find out more information I'll post it here.

Well, you learn something every day!!  :D

They sound delicious!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.
