What's wrong with our food?
« on: October 21, 2013, 08:44:33 pm »
I read this in this morning's paper - I guess it's nothing new, but good to remind ourselves why we prefer to have control over what we eat.

I hate the thought of eating human hair or duck feathers.

Oh yuck. I am so glad I have Termite and he makes all our bread etc. at least I know there is nothing yuk in there. DD actually came home from dinner out the other day and said "the food was horrid, over salted, and not natural".
We ate with friends a while ago and the sweets so was full of sugar we could hardly eat it. To think that we did this 5 years ago. We are still no where near perfect but do try.
Thank you Termite Thermomix.  :-* :-*

with the farmers, it is get bigger or get out. :)  all about the $$$$, not the food.

Alot of farms are contracted to a certain wholesaler, which then gets sold to the big 2 supermarkets.
Hydroponics is getting bigger.

small farmers have no hope at all.
which is why so many people are doing vege gardens now.. :D
My Thermomix,  Kitchen Aid, Pizza oven, Nu Wave 5 in 1, Spatulas, all brings love, laughter, happiness, and great food  to my kitchen.

Reading that was like watching a train smash, you want to look away, but you can't, so you keep looking. :o

I kept reading, wanting to hit that little X up in the top right hand corner - but I just couldn't.

The more we read about food, where it comes from, how it grows or is grown, how it is processed, how old it is before we even see it on the shelf,  how many kilometres it has done to get to our door concerns me more and more every day.

Like many of you, I try to buy local, I buy what is in season, I don't buy fruit or veges that has been imported - that I know about (how much faith can we put in those signs that grace the fruit and vege section?)

I read labels with a bloody magnifying glass, as I reckon the fine print is getting finer (no it is not my eyes!). The numbers and letters and all those really big words in the ingredients list is getting more confusing.

And now we are eating human hair and duck feathers to boot!

That begs many more questions - who supplies the hair??? Humans I know! But where from? How is it harvested? What processes does it go through to make it edible for us mere mortals?

I am not too sure why lab rats are needed still - there is a whole world filled with the 2 legged variety and we are being kept in the dark and fed so many "wrong" things!

Sorry ladies - will get off my soap box. Rant over...somewhat.

I'm off to tend my vege garden and sweet talk my free range chookies into laying more eggs. (and don't get me started on free range and "vegetarian fed free range chook eggs")

Bah humbug!

Does anyone know if the fresh fruit and veggies from Aussie farmers direct are the same? I was thinking of starting up a delivery and after reading this if there fresh products didn't go through the same processes as those purchased at the supermarkets i would definetly swap over.

Great article. Thanks for sharing. It just reinforces more of the why I refuse to buy packet food or support multinational conglomerates.

Cuilidh, very interesting article. Sums up why we are growing veggies, and will use local farmers markets.

Appalling what is happening to our food.

Very scary what slips into our "food"!  And how it can be treated before we see it.  >:(

I think there is also a compontent from pigs in ice cream - not sure what but possibly trotters for gelatine?  I could be way wrong there, though - hopefully someone will be able to correct me.
