I'm new...what are some must have ingredients to keep on hand??
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:48:25 am »
Hello,
I just paid for my TM and hopefully it will be here in the next week or so  ;D. First question is- What are some basic ingredients that I should keep in the fridge and pantry to whip up a meal after a long day at work.

Hi Fee, welcome to the forum.  Risottos are quick meals so some risotto rice is a must - my favourite is Chelsea's creamy prawn risotto. Do some searching through the all-in-one meal section, find yourself some recipes which suit your taste, print out the recipes and get the ingredients in.  That way you will be ready to go as soon as delivery has taken place.  CP's favourite recipes in the Chat section is another place to look for suggestions.  Sorry, I am on the iPad and it's a bit too slow finding the links.

Hi FeeOB & congratulations on your new purchase :)
I found I use heaps more garlic and parmesan cheese since having the tmx. Risottos are usually fairly quick to whip up after work so you might like to make sure you've got aborio rice too :)
You'll need to make some veggie stock (because it's used in lots of different dishes) so onion, celery, tomato, zucchini, carrot, parsley/herbs and salt will be needed for that :)
Happy cooking!

Welcome to the forum FeeOB.Good advice from Judy and Jamberie to get you researching here for ideas of what you might like to cook.
CP's Favourite List is here. A firm favourite from that list is Lamb Sauce for Pasta which is very quick and delicious :)

Welcome to the forum FeeOB. Your consultant should make a dish or some stock with you on delivery of your thermomix and should advise you of the ingredients needed for that. One of my favourite quick dishes is non fried fried rice here.

Agilio Oilio E Peperoncino (garlic oil and chilli pasta) recipe is delicious, simple and quick - serve on it's own or as an accompaniment to a piece of steak or chicken.

Hello and welcome FeeOB! :D

Great suggestions from the ladies already ;) I always keep rice (basmati and arborio), different sizes of pasta, tinned tomatoes and other tinned vegetables, garlic and lots of different spices on hand for main meals :)
For desserts, eggs and milk for custard and frozen fruit for sorbets or fruity dreams :)

When you read more of the recipes and start writing weekly menu plans (if you do that) then you'll be able to plan your shopping lists and have all the ingedients you need for delicious, quick and easy meals :)

Have fun, and don't be afraid to ask questions! ;)

Hello and welcome to the forum, congratulations on your purchase, keep in touch with the forum and you will never be short of ideas to cook.
You will be using more fresh ingredients now no packets or prepared food.  Keep an eye out for, when frozen berries are 1/2 price and stock up on them, very handy for sweets.  You are going to love this cooking experience, well I hope so anyway.

Hi & welcome.

For meals, I'd say fresh garlic and ginger.  I also seem to use a bit more coconut milk/cream and cashew nuts in my meals now (I really like THIS recipe which uses these.
Quite early on, I cooked up a batch of tikka paste (recipe was from on here I think), and that also had onion, chilli and a few herbs & spices.
Parmesan cheese too, as already mentioned.   :D
Cream cheese or cream in sauces sometimes.

Probably stocking up on whole spices has been my biggest change.  And then I can make a wide variety of flavours from whatever I have.  My first couple of shops we a little more expensive, but since then I have certainly noticed an improvement as everything is just made from the pantry ingredients.

Good luck - so much fun ahead for you!   ;)

Welcome to the fun of the thermomix and especially this forum.
Our gorgeous members have made perfect suggestions. I also found that I was using more EVOO and because I love tomake bread things I always have Bakers' flour on hand, also some rye flour and wholemeal flour and of course yeast which I keep in the freezer.
Owning a tmx is very exciting and i'll look forward to hearing about your adventures.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

Congratulations on your purchase fee. Lots of great suggestions from the girls already. I seem to use a lot of eggs, whole almonds, Parmesan, garlic cloves and rice since buying my tmx 8 months ago. Of course a good stocked pantry of basics such as flour, sugar, baking powder and spices helps too. Buy them as you need them and don't forget to start using up your old jars and packets before your machine arrives ;)
