Amber ate one raw down on the beach but funnily enough, we suspended them in a bucket of sea water to purge overnight then were so busy the next day we forgot all about them LOL.  In that time they spit out the sand, impossible to eat if they are not purged.  The kids are pretty good and will try things, some of the chutneys & relishes they tried at the market didn't touch my lips  ;)

It is fun BZB, here's some images - we just used our hands to dig for them.  They're also known as pipis.

Judy, I used to go digging for these when I was a kid growing up in Penang!! We called it "korek siput" that translates to dig for clams :D

Was so much fun, and yummy :P

Good, I'm glad you know all about it then BZB.  It's interesting to hear what other countries call these things.

We go cockling quite a bit at Monkey Mia. We then use the cockles as bait to catch small bait fish that we then use as bait for bigger fish.
We tried cooking and eating them once but after they were purged and cooked up with a little butter and garlic we decided they still looked like bait and couldn't eat them.  :-X

We used to go for pipis when I was younger - dad loved them, but my sister and I hated them - it didn't make it any better that it always seemed to be wet and cold when we went to dig for them.

Must have just missed you at Victor/Pt Elliott Judy, I took the kids there for the day last Friday! Sounds like you had a great time.

One of those days was very windy wasn't it Deb but that wouldn't have bothered the kids. It's so lovely down there and it's been years since I was there.
