Can I grind rock salt without damaging thermie?
« on: May 05, 2010, 07:24:32 am »
Hi
I know I could just try it but I don't want to damage anything!
We use organic rock salt and I'd like to keep a supply of it ground for cooking etc.  So can Thermie help me out with this?
TIA
Narelle

Just be careful how long you do it for. The 1st time I did it, it was fine powder!  :-)) 5-10 sec depending on how you like it.

Yes I do too, in fact I think somewhere in the consultants stuff it says to use either Celtic salt or freshly ground rock salt.

There are salt recipes - but I was wondering about the old Dishwashing liquid dramas - was that a problem with the salt- or salt and acid ??

Have to go back to the thread when I have time = Steve didn't know - it may have been the acid?

I was wondering the same thing Thermomixer and haven't ground any salt in mine just in case.  My Thermie is so scratched from the dishwashing liquid that I don't want to risk anything else.

Same as Chelsea,   however I did grind some Celtic salt with Nori and it was fine.   Think it may have been the acid and salt that did the damage.  I wont be making any more dishwashing liquid.

I don't have these scratches. I grind my salt and crack my pepper in there - Thermomix does endorse this - cause we mention it in out cooking demo when adding salt to the bread.  8)

I've done lots of salt without any problems.

Those 'gourmet' salts have such nice flavours. I find myself using them more and more.  Collection now includes Indian black salt, French Brittany salt, Maldpn salt, Himalayan salt and Murray River salt, which is fast becoming the favourite!

There are good places on-line to buy these from, if anyone wants the links.  Are we allowed tp do that?  I'm just a consumer and as they say, have no affiliation to them.
cheers Miranda

Same here Miranda. I have always done my salt in the TMX .  Sure thing to put any links in. Always a great help.

I also grind salt in my TMX. I buy sacks of 20kg seasalt for my restaurant and I never had any problems.

I have been pondering this ...

something that came to me is I wonder if the difference is with grinding it is at high speed so it won't get caught under the blades to scratch the bowl where as the dishwasher detergent was cooked at a lower speed (from memory - I have thrown the recipe out!!!) which would allow a chunk of salt to wedge under the blades and pretty much stay there until it dissolved.

I could be wrong, this is just what my musings produced lol
