Paper Mache glue?

Hi,

Has anyone every made paper mache glue in the TMX? A recipe I have found at http://www.buzzle.com/articles/paper-mache-instructions-recipe-to-make-paper-mache.html says:

½ cup multipurpose flour
3 tbsp sugar
2 cups cold water
2 cups boiling water
In a bowl make a paste using the multipurpose flour and cold water. Boil 2 cups of water and add this mixture to it. Stir continuously to avoid any lumps from being formed. Bring it to a boil and remove from the heat. Stir in the sugar and mix well. The mixture thickens as it cools.

Was thinking that this could be done by putting flour and cold water in bowl on sp 2 till combined. Set temp to Varoma , sp 2, then add boiling water while motor still running till combined. Could then turn temp off but leave mixing while temp goes down, and add sugar.

Only question is what it will do to the bowl? Assume I would need to transfer to another bowl as soon as consistency is reached to be able to add newspaper, etc.

Would others try this or is it a bit scary? Should I just stick with the traditional hand mix method?

not sure i am only new too but i think the speed needs to be more than 2
i have been having problems with burning my bowl and i think thats my problem speed to low

I would think it is worth a go. I guess it will be quite thick so  I would see how speed 2 works - if it is too fast it will splash round the bowl and be harder to extract. 

If it does stick or burn, you can use a solution of half water and half vinegar, varoma. speed 5 for 5 minutes and it should then be easier to clean.

Well done you for giving it  a go! My philosophy in life is to send my kids to kindergarten to get to do all that kind of stuff so they can get all their creativity going and mess up somewhere else than our house.

As a kid my Mum used to make glue for us with just flour and boiling water. She used to mix the flour with a tiny bit of water and then pour boiling water in while stirring madly. This would be ok for paper mache I would think. Let it cool before the ankle biters use it though.

I would love to be able to say that I ended up making our paper mache glue in my TMX but my DH put his foot down on this one. Said that he had sooooo much PVA glue in the shed that I should use up, and that he really didn't want Thermie being ruined by glue! It was hard to argue with his protection of Thermie, so I went with the PVA.

1000 years ago when I taught art I made my own glue.  Just flour, water and salt.  I don't think it would hurt the TMX to make it . I would put in flour and water and salt into the bowl ,zap to mix and then cook on Varoma,  Use the proportions in the given recipe.  Just bring it to the boil and cook until clear.  Wish I had had a TMX 1000 years ago.
