Measuring Cup (MC) - Which way up?
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:03:40 pm »
When I got my TM 2 1/2 years ago, my consultant said I should put the MC in with the open end up unless I was using the butterfly.

I didn't asky why but this makes sense to me because:
1.  It is easier to lick!
2.  It is easier to wash
3.  It makes the inside of the lid "flatter"

I wonder now whether I am the only person in the world who has a fixation with checking out who has got them in "upside down" in photos & videos - eg. Chef Dylan. Or is mine actually in "upside down".

I know I am a bit obsessive - I like shoes at 90 degrees, furniture, etc at 45 or 90 degrees and so on. Just wondering which way up the rest of you use your MC?!?!

Don't know whether it's right or wrong, but I always use mine as if I'm using the butterfly.

I was taught the same as you Hannah, now I tell my customers that it is a matter of personal choice but all the reasons you listed are why I "try" to remember to use it the other way.

Another one is that stuff doesn't get caught up there and go round and round when you are milling lol

I think there is a discussion on here somewhere and Thermomixer did inform us that it works better with the flat side down. I will see if I can find it for you otherwise I will have to rely on our fab JD  :-* :-*

:D :D I've searched for an hour Faffa with no luck so perhaps you will have to wait for Thermomixer to log on and he may remember where it is.

It is there somewhere JD. I remember reading it. I also remember someone always making sure their daughter's lid is in with flat bottom down just so it get and airing! ;D ;D

I was told the same thing about the MC too.  I've also taken to throwing a teatowel over the top when milling to stop grains flying out - not sure if that's a no no.

I always have my MC open side up, but then a friend has hers down.

I usually have mine flat side down as I find it easier to clean.

With regard to grinding, I picked up a tip on here some time back to put a piece of kitchen paper on the bowl before putting the lid on to prevent stuff flying out.   This works really well and there's no need in this case to put the MC on at all.... in fact I think it would be pretty difficult to do so.   :D

i think the flat side goes down because then you dont need to change it when it comes time to drizzle in oil, liquid etc. plus its heaps easier to clean and or lick when the need arises!  :)

I put my piece of kitchen paper on the top of the lid and jam it in with the MC when grinding.

Can't remember where the original info is, but yes best with the flat side down, unless using the butterfly for things like mayo.

Most chefs get it wrong.  But it is much easier to clean & less to get caught up inside.
