Packets of custard powder
« on: January 04, 2011, 12:36:57 am »
I want to make the Polish cheesecake from the MWOC book and it uses 2 packets of vanilla custard powder.  Can anyone enlighten me as to the weight of those imported sachets - is it 5g per packet?  Going shopping but if I can't find them I will be wanting to use the equivalent weight in normal custard powder.

Do you think you could go onto a european online supermarket site and see if you can find it on a cyber aisle? I remember seeing lots of things from europe on the shelves when I was in London, so that might solve the language problem. Worth a try.

JD just googled and got a result saying custard powder sachets - 2.6ozs. Hope this is what you are looking for  Can't remember the brand.

Thanks for you input girls but I couldn't get any quark this morning anyway so this recipe will have to wait until I can go further afield where I know that continental shop does sell the custard sachets & quark.  As MWOC is an international recipe book, it would be nice if there was an attachment for Australians explaining any ingredient that is not the norm here.
2.6oz seems a bit too much Shiraz49, I just weighed some custard powder and only got to .8 of an ounce and it was way more than what would be in those very flat sachets which is what I thought they meant for this recipe.  In fact, I think I'll email Tenina and see exactly what it is.

Thanks CC, I know I did ask isi once about the weight - that is why I have 5g in my head. I've browsed isi's dessert recipes but I can't find the reference to it at all. Ah, maybe it is in cakes or biscuits, will try that tomorrow.  It isn't a Birds brand, it is definitely a European brand and they package the little sachets in lots of 6.  I've emailed Tenina in H.O. but with what's on her plate at the moment I don't expect an immediate answer. No hurry though, I know I can get both the powder and the quark at one of our shopping centres not too far away.  Luckily it isn't for anything special, I just fancied the look of it.

I just remembered that when I made Isi's Creamy Redcurrant muffins she used a packet of vanilla pudding in the recipe and she told me that it weighed 22g.Do you think that they mean packets of vanilla pudding and it's been lost in the translation? ???

I have discovered that it is cottees that make the one that I was thinking of, not white wings, but they are rather large!!

Tenina got back to me overnight (how quick was that) to say we could replace those imported sachets of custard powder with 10g cornflour for each packet and add some vanilla extract and even zested lemon.  I might still use up some custard powder I have here though to get the pale yellowy look of the gorgeous picture and add some vanilla too. So if you have the book, make a note on the recipe (page 260) to use 20g in total here.  Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

Judy perhaps it's the Dr Oetker brand.  They come in little packets and some supermarkets have them.  If not you can get them
at good continental shops and some butchers i.e. Standom Meats, Barrossa Fine Foods.

That's the one Trudy - I've seen it at a continental deli in West Lakes which is where I will go.
