Healthy Sandwich Spread ideas please?
« on: August 12, 2012, 05:38:07 am »
Alternatives to butter or margarine for sandwiches or toast?  Preferably vegan no oil.  I can think of avocado, mustard, tahini, roasted pumpkin... what are your sandwich spread recipes?  Anything unique or obvious that you could share?

Sometimes nothing hits the spot like Vegemite with butter on toast - for the butter/marg avoiders have you found a Vegemite partner?

Thank you

Hummus is ok as a sandwich spread depending on the filling. It won't work with vegemite. I can't think of anything that would work with vegemite. I have a friend that just eats vegemite plain on bread with no butter or other oil based spread.

Avo works really well with Vegemite.  Not a butter/marg avoider but do like this combo and will sometimes choose it if I'm pretending to be healthy for the day (rapidly followed by a huge slab of chocolate cake! ;D).

Viv, have you got Aileen Sforcina's Rainbow Recipes?

In this book she has recipes for 'Not Margarine' which is a grain based margarine/butter substitute made from polenta,
Cashew Capsicum Spread/dip/dressing, Cashew 'mock chicken' spread and Cashew 'cream cheese' all of which are suitable as spreads.

For years I have gone without butter or margarine on my sandwiches and toast, at first it took a bit of getting used to but now I don't even realize it isn't there. I do have one little treat though, a dollop of praise mayonnaise on my salad sandwiches  :P

Yesteday I made this http://www.addictedtoveggies.com/2010/12/atv-staple-recipe-raw-vegan-sour-cream.html for the first time.  As yet I haven't actually tasted it, so I'm flying blind with this thread, but the writer of the Addictedtovegies blog says she uses this as the basis of many of her dips etc., so it should be easily adapted as a spread of some sort.

Thanks for your replies.
Chookie do you mix them all together?  Sounds yum.
Vegemite & avo I'll have to try that.
JD have you tried the Not Margarine, I do have the book but haven't tried it.
Another nice blog to read Culidh thanks.

Yes Viv I love Vegemite and Avocado, put the Veg on first then the avo.  DD have you tried, Vegemite and banana, sounds disgusting but i like it, heard about it on the radio one day and the caller said don't knock it until you try it.  OK it is OK.  Also love Veg, Avo and a poached egg, that's probably my favourite.

No Viv I haven't tried that recipe - I'm a dairy eater.
