LOL- I am probably a good cook because I didn;t like my mother's food.

My mother could possibly have been a great cook, but my father and brothers and sisters had boring tastes.

Mum used to do the BEST mince tarts and was great with Christmas cakes - full on icing.

But mains .............................. now I cook.

I tried cooking my porridge in the THX but now I've gone over to steaming it. I bring 500ml of water to the boil, put 50g of porridge oats, 1 pinch of salt and 300ml of milk in a bowl which fits into the Varoma and then steam for about 15 minutes. It turns out creamier and doesn't resemble wallpaper paste...

I love TMX porridge - but I didn't like the recipe in the book (UK - haven't tried the Oz one).  I just make it as though I were doing it by hand:

Double - triple the amount of milk (or water & milk, or apple juice, or water) to the amount of oats I've tipped in (depends on the texture you like, think about how you'd cook it normally.  My husband likes 2 parts liquid to 1 part oats, I like 3 parts liquid to 1 part oats)

100oC/ reverse  :-: speed spoon ^^ / about 15 minutes.

That allows up to 8 minutes for the fridge cold milk to heat up to temperature, and then time for the oats to cook - just as though I were cooking it on the hob.  Meanwhile, I've finished in the shower and am ready to eat my breakfast!

Might have to try the steaming idea.

I usually only cook it at 80 or 90 deg on reverse.

It may also depend on the type of oats used??

I thought somebody may have mentioned that - but now I can't see anything - there are so many types/standards of rolled oats now !!

I know I am a bit late joining the conversation - not sure what the go is on reviving old threads - PLMK if this is not good forum etiquette :-)

Like a number of TMXers, my first batch of porridge yesterday was a resounding failure - I followed the recipe in the EDC and ended up with slightly warm goop. I came here and read everything I could and this morning's porridge was significantly more successful. For 2 of us, I added 1 cup of organic rolled oats, a little over 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Varoma temp for 3 mins on reverse, speed 3.5 (it only got to 37 in that time so next time I will let it go for longer at Varoma or use boiling water), then 90 degrees for 8.5 mins on reverse speed 3.5. It took 3 min or so to get to 90 so I upped the remaining time to give it 9 mins at 90 as I used to simmer them on the stove for 8-9 mins once they started boiling. The result was lovely thick porridge just how I like it :-) The good news is that the other person I was cooking them for is also a TM owner and he'd given up doing porridge in the TM as he had only followed the recipe in the EDC, so now he's going to try it as above and see how he goes!

Niki - the EDC is a good place to start with recipes - but for the best tips and properly tested recipes the forum is far more reliable.  ;D

I've been making this porridge consistently for about 2 weeks and here's what I do:

[EDC quantities adjusted for myself & 2 kids, and there's alway still a bit leftover]
90g wholegrain quick oats (because they're "quick" ie rolled oats but partially cut, I don't pulverise)
365g liquid (I just use cold water from the tap, oats are creamy so I find milk is unnecessary)
Dash of vanilla essence
Dash of ground cinnamon
I don't add salt

Cook 8 mins at 90degrees on reverse soft speed.  While porridge is cooking, I pour boiling water over some dried apricots & sultanas, and microwave some frozen mixed berries.  Drain the fruit now a little plumper, add berries and this is a nice topping for the porridge.  My son prefers it plain with some milk added & golden syrup.

Starting with the recipe in the F&ECB. I made it 6 times before I was satisfied that it turned out the way I like it. I do not like mine thick or glutinous. I could cut my first try with a knife and fork. :o With my recipe (for one) it ends up looking way too runny but within a minute or so it becomes creamier and thickens up to how I like it. All I can say is that you chose what appears to be a simple recipe to start off with but just like Rice pudding, it needs experimenting with to get it to your taste. Don't give up

20 g    porridge oats   
200 g    milk   
1 tsp    sugar   
½ tsp    nutmeg   
10 g    raisins   
 
 
 
 1. Weigh the oats into the TM bowl
 2. Weigh and add milk, cinnamon or nutmeg and sugar
 3. Mix ingredients for 3 secs
 4. cook 5mins/100*/spoon reverse
 5. add dried fruit to finished porridge and stir in
 
 
Servings: 1
Yield: 1 portion
Preparation time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Ready in: 7 minutes

DD, I tried your version for my breakfast this morning and it was perfect for me.  I know some people like it gloopy but I don't so your way is now my way  ;)  I used goji berries instead of raisins and because DH doesn't eat porridge, your recipe for 1 is ideal for me.  Thanks so much for sharing, this was the first time I've had porridge this winter. Because I don't have a big breakfast, I thought your 1 serving might last me 2 meals but no, it was perfect in every way.

I am so glad that you tried it Judy as I have come to respect your opinion on this forum.

 I live alone so that I scale many of my well used simple recipes to one serving. Other times, especially time consuming recipes, I may well make more and freeze some individual servings. Increasing the ingredients for more people on my single recipes will of course work but I would test out the procedure as time and speed can alter the result of a bigger quantity.

 I am off now to make my breakfast. I think I will go for the porridge for one today too. I might just forget the cinnamon and raisins and just top it with some elderberry pie filling that I have left over from a pie.
