Pantry Preparation
« on: December 21, 2011, 05:11:21 am »
Hello fellow thermies,
I was wondering what the key 'must have' ingredients are to have in my pantry when converting to Thermomix cooking...both sweet and savoury.  Ie...baker's flour, yeast, spices etc. I will need to do a big shop and thought there may be a thread on this topic but can't seem to find one. Thanks.

I'm new to this forum as well but I know there are threads somewhere in here which can help and I'm sure someone will post a link soon. As a new user I've found I'm using a lot more eggs, butter, milk and EVOO than I used to - depends on what you'll be doing; we make a lot of custard for instance! Also, freeze some milk into ice cubes for instant ice cream and the kids will love you!

If you do an advanced search using the word 'pantry' you will get some ideas.
This may help too.

I like to always keep a good supply of whole nuts, seeds and favourite dried fruits so you can make your own muesli, cakes, biscuits etc. Many of the recipes you can adapt to what you have in the pantry so I tend to stock my favourite ones and use them as substitutes. Essentials could include milk, flour, eggs, yeast, butter, olive oil, meat (in particular I like the thermie for recipes with chicken thigh fillets), rice, pasta... With fruit and vegies, get what's fresh and on special (or the local markets are great for this) - then just do a search on the forum to make things to suit what you have to save you buying extra things. All depends on what you like cooking though... and some 'must have' ingredients may not suit everyone's tastes so it depends on your individual preference.

Also don't forget cheese.  Most freeze well if you want to buy in bulk, but remember to only freeze it if you will be cooking with it.  Some cheeses are not really suitable for cheeseboards etc if they have been frozen.

I'm new to TMX cooking too, and we are using a whole lot more of these items:
eggs, milk, butter, EVOO, flour, onions, garlic, ginger, carrots, rice, and chicken.

I agree with everyone else that what you need to stock will depend on your tastes.
Each time I go to the shops, I'm buying a lot more fresh ingredients - which feels great!

We haven't had any takeaway since THX arrived.
We used to have Thai, Mexican, or Greek takeaway once a week, pizza on Tuesdays, and Subway on Saturdays. Not any more! :)
