varoma vegetable steaming times?
« on: January 09, 2013, 07:52:04 am »
Is there a list of times on here anywhere for steaming veggies in the varoma? I tried a search but it didn't turn up anything...

Here's a list I posted a while back from Full Steam Ahead PT - it was in this thread.

Carrots 800g 30 mins cut into slices
carrots 800g 25-30 mins whole, very thin
broccoli florets 800g 15 mins
cauliflower florets 800g 25-30 mins
cabbage 800g 23-25 mins, different kinds, cut into strips
asparagus 800g 25-30 mins, stalks, medium size (this is far too long,  only take around 7 minutes)
peppers 500g 15 mins, cut into 1cm strips
button mushrooms 500g 15 mins
peas 500g 16-18 mins frozen
potatoes 500g 30 mins cut into pieces, medium size
leek 800g 25 mins cut into slices
green beans 800g 25-30 mins whole
fennel 800g 30 mins cut into quarters
fennel 800g 18-20 mins cut into slices
spinach 500g 10-12 mins fresh, not more than 500g
zucchini 800g 25 mins cut into 1cm slices

Thats the vegies, there are fruit, fish & seafood and meat times too if you want them listed.

I must admit I don't even look at this chart, I wing it like you do and it also depends on how much you like your vegies cooked.

I'm sure once I've cooked veggies several times I will be able to just wing it, but as it is now I can't judge it - they've either come out undercooked, overcooked or half and half.

Thanks for the list :D I probably should get that book, but will check out some reviews first. I only have the edc and festive flavours...

Probably . . once again, it's practice and personal experience  . .and what vegetables you're using .  Not much help, am i! :-))

I have the FSA book . . I'll have a look and see if it offers any info along those lines

It does PT. When I do steamed vegies, I cut the carrots into batons and put them on the bottom, then potatoes in cubes, sweet potato in cubes, broccoli florets cut in half or quarters if large, and then sweet corn on top. Usually cook for about 20-25 mins. Perfecto :D

Easy rule is harder vegies in the varoma dish and softer vegies on the tray (eg brocollini, snow peas, zucchini, asparagus).  Best to check on them occasionally and just remove those that are cooked and place them into a warmed thermosaver rather than overcook them.  It takes a while to judge sizes and times but you'll get there. I don't even think about it now, it's automatic.  I've never even written the different times down, I seem to judge it pretty well these days but this only comes with using the varoma a lot.  If you only use it here and there you will forget the times very quickly.
