'Summary table of basic functions' from EDC
« on: April 28, 2013, 05:58:48 am »
 hi all,

I've only had my thermomix a couple of weeks so still trying to figure out speeds and times for basic functions like softening  butter, chopping  etc and I find that the Times and speeds on the summary table in the book are way off!!  so now I'm having to figure things out by trial and error.

anyone feel the same about the basic functions summary table???

Thanks  :-)

They are a guide more than anything ... a lot depends on how chopped you want it and then that will depend on the size you chpoped it to start with to go in the bowl, how cold the butter and room temp is etc for the softening of the butter - there a many things that affect the outcome hence the guide only :)  the most important thing to adhere to is the weights when milling/grinding/chopping etc to avoid stripping your blades  :o

The first one I changed to suit myself was to only chop an onion (halved if mediuml or quartered if large) for 2 seconds/speed 5 as all the early recipes turned it to mush.  If you think the times are too long, just do half the time to start with and add more as needed.

I have found that it takes a bit of practise to get things as you want them. It is best to go carefully with the time and speed. It is easy to process it more but very hard once you have coleslaw soup or similar.
For garlic and onion I prefer to set the speed to about 7 and drop them through the hole in the lid.

I agree with everyone else... And thought I'd add that soon you'll know by the sound of your tmx how chopped your onions etc are...
I have a Facebook page with all things cooking, you'll find it here: https://www.facebook.com/What-Amber-Ate-1097437023601587/

 Thanks everyone!!

sounds like everyone has their own way of doing simple things like chopping an  onion,  so looks like it's just trial and error  :-)  I'm going to make the coleslaw ( with your 'magic  mayo' judydawn!)  for husband birthday next week... let's hope I don't serve coleslaw soup to our family ;-)

Good luck with the coleslaw Romina, that's a good one to prove just how quickly the TMX can chop something.  The Magic mayo is perfect for coleslaw, I've used other recipes but nothing beats it in my opinion.

Just take it slowly and follow the recipe, use the spatula and it will be perfect. If its not, do a second lot and make it chunky, then mix the two together. No one will ever know.  ;) ;)
