Almond Meal Substitute
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:25:49 am »
Could anyone provide a substitute for 250g of almonds in the Torta Caprese recipe in the EDC.
My daughter is allergic to all nuts, but I'd really like to make this cake.

OV,  it is the texture of the nuts that make this cake.  I can't think of a substitute that would give the same result.  Linseed might give a bit of texture, 1/2 with wholemeal plain flour. Someone else might have a good idea.

Have a read of this OV, it might give you some ideas but whether it will be successful or not I couldn't really say.  You never know if you don't try though. Keep scrolling down for more answers.

I really have no idea. However this morning I made a pastry that had semolina and wholemeal flour in it. Would that be an idea?

My DH has a nut allergy, so I can't use almonds either.

You can successfully substitute the things the others have suggested like flour or different types of ground seeds for almond meal, but I've only done it if the recipe asks for a small quantity of nuts.

In this recipe almond meal is the main ingredient. It's used instead of flour. Personally I would choose a different recipe for a chocolate cake that uses flour and not make this cake. You could substitute and it might work, but then again it might not. I wouldn't risk wasting time, eggs, chocolate etc. but that's just me.

Judy,  I think he Chick pea recipe from ES might be pretty close.  Not the taste but the texture might do.

I just read on a Facebook post that ground sunflower seeds are a good replacement for almond meal
