Hi! Mother of two from Melbourne.
« on: November 18, 2013, 12:32:01 am »
Hello everyone :)

I have had my Thermomix for a couple of weeks, and I'm flailing a little!

I'm a very confident cook, but really struggling to convert my existing recipes (e.g. a lemon sauce with cornflour, which I would normally bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes, what the heck temperatures and times do I use  ??? ?!).  I keep coming across this forum when I search, so thought I'd join up.

I have two small children (Zach is nearly 1, and Tabitha is 3.5), and a husband who works ALL the time, so I am hoping the TMX will become my helpful sous chef.

I cook lots of Asian style food, French dishes, American Southern classics, and 'traditional' food like stews, steamed puddings, roasts etc.

I blog here homemadeheart.blogspot.com.au - but I haven't had time for a while!

Hi Talia and welcome. Don't panic we can help.  The first  thing is to find your way around the forum for what you need. If you can' t find it just ask for help.

I looked first at swapping recipes then condiments and sauces......typed in the search area Lemon Sauce and came up with this . Easy. Peasy.

Hi Talia, welcome to the forum.  I'm glad you decided to join, there are so many people on here who are willing to offer advice like Gert has and if it makes you feel better, we all needed that help in our early days.  It sounds as if you want to jump straight into converting your favourite recipes but have you thought of looking for recipes that are very similar and using that recipe for converting your own?  As there are so many blogs out there for the Thermomix these days I usually do a general search in google unless I know the recipe is on our forum.  Google will take you back to the forum if it's there anyway.

Just google eg 'beef stroganoff Thermomix' and you will have all the recipes at your fingertips.  If searching on the forum, type in what you are looking for on the home page if you are unsure which section it may be in.  Ask as many questions as you like, you will get the hang of it in no time and hopefully we will see some of your future recipes posted here on our forum.  Have fun  :)

Welcome Talia. When I first received my thermomix I found it best to leave converting my recipes for a while as I found it very hard. Now I can do it without thinking about it and you will reach this stage too.
Find a recipe that is similar and use the method for that.
As others have mentioned just ask on here. We have members from all over the world so you can get help 24 hours a day. Rather good service.  ;) ;)

Don't look at it as "flailing", more like being over eager. Do as the others have suggested and make already converted recipes. You may even like them better, and it just gives you the confidence and know how to convert your own. There are so many recipes out there,  but we seem to have  the best  ;) welcome to the forum Talia

I had a few "difficulties" at first (disasters!), and found it helpful to stick with already-converted recipes to get a feel for how it worked.  Then I would try and find something similar and adapt it to my own ingredients/recipe.  Now I just do whatever...  ;)  It definitely gets easier and you get to know what kinds of things work best.

Hopefully Gert's recipe search helps with the sauce.

This list HERE is a great compilation of tried and true recipes with a big variety of foods.  And that's just the tip of the iceberg!  ;)
