Recipe Review - Soutzoukakia with rice MOTM Page 105
« on: August 22, 2011, 03:45:26 am »
This would probably be a good one for the kids as it is a little bland, not overly just a little.  You could spice the sauce up with some chilli I guess or a bit of FOSM?
I made 1/2 quantity of the patty mixture (makes 12 patties)  but full quantity of the sauce which it needs and cooked it on Varoma temperature not 100o as per the recipe and was then able to steam some vegies as well. I didn't think you could cook anything in the varoma at 100o - maybe I am wrong there  ???
It was OK but nothing to write home about.

I have also tried this recipe yesterday - the full recipe. I thought they were a little bland too but I also attended a Greek cooking class where the contributor made these and the were so much more flavoursome there.

When you make the sauce with the rice, the sauce flavours the rice too and makes it red.

I agree kids would love these but add a little salt and they're not too bad.

Yes Hally, half quantity of the mince mixture but the full quantity of the sauce.  I thought I would freeze some but not the case, a lot of it gets slurped up by the rice.  If you weren't cooking rice, 1/2 qty of both would be fine.

Tasty, I think the patties aren't too bad - it is the sauce that lets this recipe down. I've been thinking about it and I would saute some onion, garlic, carrot and celery before adding the sauce ingredients to the bowl and it definitely needs salt.

I was thinking of giving these a try again but from the Greek thermomix book. I can't seem to find my MOTM to see the difference in recipes. If someone could just PM the ingredients for the sauce that's all I'd need.

Mum makes these the traditional way and they're delicious. She's started cheating with the sauce lately using Dolmio's Extra Spiced Peppers jar and it certainly makes it without being too spicy.

She said she also adds a chicken stock cube to the meat patties for extra flavour and a little vinegar to make the meatballs lighter.

I might add that to the recipe I try and see how it goes.

Thanks CC. You are very efficient. I just compared with the recipe in the Greek book and it is slightly different and has 3 extra ingredients so might give it a whirl knowing this.

This recipe does not cook the rice at the same time either, well I haven't read the recipe yet but it's not in the ingredients.

So I made this using the recipe from the Greek book like I said above. I didn't add much salt to the recipe since I wanted my little ones to eat it too so it was mild but once you added salt, at the end, all the flavours came through beautifully.

I added vinegar to the meat patties and they did turn out nice and light and soft.

Have a pic and will put up some other time as don't have much time now. When I get back from holiday probbably.
