Steam/combination ovens
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:14:14 pm »
Hello all from a deep-frozen UK,
I'm finally getting a new kitchen (hooray!), and I've chosen a combination electric oven with steam function. I've read pretty much all I can find on the subject, which isn't much. I was wondering if anyone here has one, or knows any recipes or tricks? I'm hoping Thermomix + posh oven = baking success (I've heard that bread and cakes are good in a steam oven).
(Actually, I've never had a non-gas oven, so any general tips about electric cooking would be appreciated too!) :)
 Thanks
 Barry

They are good.  Tenina from TMX Australia started her blog with steam ovens before she discovered the TMX.

Check her site and especially some older posts.

Send her an email - sure she'll help.

Lucky you scyrene.  My DD has just moved into their house and they have one of those too. I know they went to cooking demos before they bought it and were very impressed with the food served (a bit like a TMX demo).  Did you not get the opportunity to attend one of those demos?  As their house is still being completed (around them) I don't know if she has had the chance yet to use it but I will be very interested to taste something cooked in it. The reason she originally bought the TMX was because she thought with the steaming function she may be able to do away with the need for this oven but obviously having the 2 was the way to go in the end. She has a lovely cook book which came with her oven, did you get one of those?
As far as electric ovens go, I had a couple of gas ones before changing to electric but my last 3 have been electric and I have gas hobs.  Once you get used to yours, you will find it superior to gas I'm sure.  Good luck with your new kitchen and appliances. Every cook deserves a lovely kitchen with the best appliances in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments so far! I'll be sure to check out that site.

It was only ordered today, so I don't know if it comes with a book or not - I hope so! Otherwise I'll just have to use my imagination! I don't think there are classes over here - I had to pick a new oven, wondered what steam ovens were, read about them, and was intrigued. I chose a single one that acts as a normal oven too, just in case!

It will certainly be exciting trying it. I'll look forward to hearing about it.
