Thanks for posting this reminder Maddy.  My Mum recently had a similar thing happen to her.  She shattered her lovely pie dish (and the yummy pie in it) when she placed it directly from the fridge into the oven for reheating.  Not a good idea, but sometimes you just forget these things.

Thanks for this reminder Maddy.  I have just bought a Pyrex dish to fit into the Varoma,  so will be extra careful.   I hate cleaning up broken glass.

A slice of fresh bread picks  up the glass shards & splinters wonderfully

I use a cast iron pan that pretty much lives full time in the bottom of my gas oven and has survived high temps followed by a bunch of ice cubes tossed into it.
I have a larger one (an old Dutch oven) in my bread oven and the temp in there can easily get over 700° F (370 C.) I pour hot water into it because a quart or so will fill the oven with steam for the desired period of time (5 minutes) to give the bread's oven spring a bit of a boost as well as producing a lovely crust.

Holy Guacamole! Good to hear you (and the cat) escaped unscathed. Yes even boiling water at 100 degrees is still likely to be at least 80 degrees cooler than the dish, and since glass can't shrink that fast that quickly, it has nowhere else to go but apart I'm afraid.

Whenever something glass breaks here, I can spend the next hour sweeping & vacuuming. No matter how much I clean though, you can bet about a 1 - 10 days later Damaris (and only Damaris, neither me, the boys or the dogs) will step on a piece of glass that got missed.

I had the fun of coming home to a TV with a sizable hole in it, and tiny pieces of glass everywhere two days ago.  And in carpet, so it's very hard to get it all out.  I'm sure our feet will find the bits the vacuum cleaner missed

Thank goodness for accidental damage insurance - a new TV for $100 excess is quite good value.

I was out, but the kids and DH were at home.  Our 5.5yr old CRT is being replaced with a flat screen LED.  So excellent value.

Apparantly it's significant.  That's what our insurance assessor guessed had happened when we made the call.  But no, a toddler wooden toy.

Excellent advice with using fresh bread to clean up broken glass!! WIll have to remember that for the next child inspired disaster.
