Hi All, I was just wondering if there was anyone out there making their own kefir and if there is do you make any sourdough bread with it. And would you have any recipes that you could share with me. I know this hasn`t got any thing to do with thermomix but just thought that I would ask. Thanks Sandy

I'll be interested in responses too.  It's something I want to try making.  Hope someone has some experience to share.

This word seems to have originated from a Turkish word so wondering if farfallina knows much about it.  I'm sure she will reply when she sees this thread.

I  bought mine on e-bay a couple of weeks ago and have been drinking it morning and  night and so far it has stopped nearly all the sweet cravings so that is great.

I make my own non-dairy kefir with coconut water and water kefir grains; and buy  biodynamic milk kefir ready made. I make pancakes with the kefir, kefir cheese or use it instead yogurt. The whey goes into bread baking. I do sometimes sourdough starter with grapes or apricots. There is some information in the Nourishing Tradition Book  and a lot online: here or here

isn't it funny, this is something that I have been looking into myself for the last week or so as I have also come across a heap of recipes I would love to convert that have Kefir in them  :D

Ewww! That word brings back bad childhood memories! Kids never appreciate the good stuff ya mum makes you eat. I can remember we used to like "feeding" the bug etc but eating it we just couldn't handle. Kombucha mushroom was the next thing mum got on to after that! She would still have the recipe for Kefir somewhere - I'll have to look.  ;)

Intrepidtrier - did you buy the grains and are making the drink yourself?  Are you enjoying it?  It's something I'm interested in trying.

Wow, Nay! You sure did have an interesting childhood!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Cathy 79, Yes I did buy the grains on the net, on e-bay, and I am really enjoying making and drinking it every morning and night, It only take about 1 minute in the morning to pour it into a jug and then  add another litre of milk to the grains for the next batch. Everyone that tries it doesn`t like it much so I suppose that it would be an acquired taste. When I get enough of it I will be trying to make some yoghurt and cheese with it.

Thanks for sharing Sandy.  I have made it years ago, but then just went with yoghurt.  Should get more adventurous again
