Green Tomato Pickles
« on: May 07, 2011, 12:26:51 pm »
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has made Green Tomato Pickles in the TM. I noticed the question was asked a year ago but no one had actually tried it. I was given a few KG of green tomatoes today. I have made them before but pre Thermomix days.
Thanks in advance.

Dede, have you seen this recipe on Recipe Community for Green Tomato Pickles.  I've never made them myself, there is something about eating green tomatoes which doesn't appeal to me but this one is converted for the TMX.

Thanks Judy,
I don't like them at all. I love (red) tomato relish but not green. But my Husband loves them. Last time I made it he ate so much he got gout. lol serve him right for eating so much. Think I better hide some jars this time.

I made the Green tomato Pickles today but changed it slightly by only adding 150g of Vinegar and 1 Tbs of ezy sauce, everything else was added as listed. Made 3 jars and turned out perfect and very yummy. Even i liked it.
So thanks Judy for showing me the recipe.
I like the spiciness of the ezy sauce so that's why I included it.

I ended up with a couple of kilos of green tomatoes off my bushes this year and, whilst I was fluffing about trying to find a recipe for green tomato pickles the tomatoes started ripening, so I just left them and now I am about to make passata sauce!

I have made this at the end of summer when cleaning out the garden...it is really good and incrediable on Lamb ( as well as other stuff ) I did a "rough Thermomix conversion" for my friend, this is a edited  half version of the origional recipe...but I left the spices as the full amount ( which I think it needs ) Sorry for the  lack of correct formatting I did a straigh copy for my notes...am at work and not supposed to be reading the forum!  :o

Sally's green tomato pickle
Chef: Sally Wise

Chilly nights and frost on the ground? This easily-made pickle's a good way to use up those green tomatoes you get at the end of the growing season.
You need:
Tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, spices and flavouring. Use a good quality curry powder for best results.

   * 350 ml vinegar (white gives the best presentation)
   * 1.5kg (3lb) green tomatoes
   * 500g (1lb) onions
   * small handful of salt
   * ½ teaspoon pepper
   * 500g (1lb) sugar
   * 3 tablespoons curry powder
   * 3 tablespoons mustard powder

Method:
Chop the onions and tomatoes, sprinkle with salt, mix well in a bowl, then leave to stand overnight.  (Just cut up in TM on about speed 5 make sure you keep it chunky not puree it )

Next day drain off the fluid. Add three quarters of the vinegar, bring to the boil and boil for 10 minutes. Add the sugar, bring back to the boil, stirring, then boil for one hour, stirring often. ( I put it in the thermomix or reverse 100 not sure how long I sugest check it at 30, then 45 minutes )

Mix the remaining vinegar with the dry ingredients. Add to the pot and stir until well combined. Boil 5 minutes, then bottle and seal.

Sally tells us this is "...the best and easiest pickle recipe she's ever come across".

Hi Cornishcream,
Ezi sauce is basically a replacement for spices in recipes such as plum sauce,relish and tomato sauce. I have been brought up on homemade sauces and relish and love the spicy taste when ezy sauce is used. Its just basically Water, Food Acid, ground black pepper, clove oil and Chilli premixed in a bottle.

Thanks Deeau for your recipe. I still have quiet a few tomatoes left so will make a batch up from your version as well to compare.

And Judydawn I'm going to hide the other jars away and rash en him I think. Cause we all know what men are like when they are in pain. lol. (Sorry to the other male TM forum users)

 :D :D :D :D Yes we do although I must admit my DH suffers and never complains but I've seen others with a sore toe carry on like a cut chook.  One of my friends pulled her DH up in front of us once, citing my DH as an example.
