Sleeks - What can I make?
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:33:19 pm »
Hi Guys

For some reason 6 months ago I planted sleeks in the garden. They are all now ready to harvest and i'm absolutely stuffed for what I am going to use them for. Any ideas??  Do you think they would be ok as a substitute for the leek in Potato and Leek soup.

Hi Gals. It's a cross between a spring onion and a leek! Like a mini leek. :)

It sounds very interesting. I think you could use it anywhere you needed leeks or even as a spring onion in stir fries. I've never heard of them. How long did they take to grow?

Cookie1 they took about 10 weeks to get them to where they are now. And they look ready to be picked. I'll go and take a photo so you can all see. Be right back!!

Here they are :)

Thank Lisa, how fantastic.  i would use them , as Cookie says, where you would use leeks or spring onions.  i would imagine that they would be milder than spring onions.

Update - I substituted 1 onion in this recipe http://www.recipecommunity.com.au/recipes/chicken-and-lemon-risotto/26989 (sorry i don't know how to do the hyperlink thing) for 4 sleeks and it was fantastic! definitely milder than spring onion and normal onions, but probably a little stronger than a leek. Delicious. Now what to use for the rest of them! ho hum. the joys of using fresh produce. Love it!

I think this must have been the last post I read before finishing off for the day yesterday because last night I dreamed of sleeks!  I'd never head of them before and can't even remember what they tasted like in my dream - all I can remember is that I had the dream - talk about the TMX and this forum keeping our brains ticking over 24 hours a day!

I'd like to try and grow these. Just after reading your post a friend brought round 3 leeks and heaps of spring onions.
