Hi everyone
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:10:59 am »
Hi.

I am very impatiently waiting to get back to Australia to get a Thermomix.  Have been to a demo and thinking about getting one for awhile.  My hubby is based in Borneo and we are here for 4 weeks.  Head back to Australia in a couple of days but will be moving here for another two years as he has resigned his contract with the company.  Now life in the jungle is fantastic  ;D however in between watching out for orangutans off the back veranda or making sure the crazy little monkeys don't steal the washing I need to cook.  This I have discovered is a bit of a challenge as alot of the food I can throw in my trolley at the local store is hard (read - impossible  :-\ ) to get here.  I have not wiped the smile of my face since I found this great forum and discovered that cooking from scratch isn't going to be too hard with the wonderful Thermomix.  Hubby has agreed we should definitely get one as I read out several of the tasty dishes on this site and that I will be able to find the ingredients in our local village. I will need to try a few substitutes so will make sure I keep everyone posted as to how these turn out.  Our dd7 is also very excited that she will not be restricted to rice and fish 7 nights a week.  I will have a month or two to practice in Australia before the thermomix and I board our planes (5 of them) to get here, but I will be taking it as carry on so should make it unscathed.  Keep your fingers crossed for me that customs doesn't take a liking to it and confiscate it (what a heart breaking thought).  I am sure I will have many questions and am looking for to catching up with you all on here.

Hi Borneo Mum, welcome to the forum.  I will follow your adventures with interest and can't wait to see how many recipes you are able to buy all the ingredients for in Borneo.  Perhaps you will convert some local recipes for us to try, bearing in mind the type of ingredients you use and what we can get here.  I'm sure the girls who fly with their TMX's say to take the blade out and pack it in your suitcase rather than take it onboard as carry on luggage.  Someone will confirm that though I'm sure.

Welcome Borneo Mum!! Yes as JD says, take the blades out and pack in your luggage  ;) Customs will have an interest in it as I have a customer that flies back and forth between Perth and Hong Kong with hers and always attacks interest but has had no problems so hope you have the same experience. You certainly won't regret your purchase  ;D

Hi and welcome Borneo Mum. Your life certainly sounds interesting but I can understand your desire to cook.

Welcome to the forum :) Have you organized for it to be ready when you get to Oz? Depending on where you are flying in to it can be 10 working days not including postage to remote areas.

Hello and welcome BorneoMum. You have a very interesting life. My DS is about to adopt an orangutan (if WWF ever get their act together). I am sure thermomix will make a great difference to your eating habits and when your neighbours hear about it, they too will be wanting one. (Perhaps consultancy is in need over there  ;D )

Enjoy your time back in Aus and I look forward to hearing more about your adventurous life.

Take care DG xxxx

Thank you for all the lovely welcomes.  Yep it is a huge plane trip we leave Snagatta (Borneo) at 7am Friday and get back to Townsville on Sunday at 11am. Luckily DD is a good traveller.  One of the other expat wives did mention the need to take the blade out to travel, thanks for confirming that.  That is great that your DS is sponsoring an orangutan, having seen them here at rehabilitation centres they are really struggling to survive.  We are blessed to have wild ones the frequent the trees at the back of the house (we are very remote).  It is sad to think that they are losing their jungle.  I will definitely try to convert some of the amazing local dishes to TMX and will be sure to convert to ingredients that can be found without to my hassle.
I have chatted to a consultant and she mentioned the 10 days for delivery which suits as I will have about 8 weeks in OZ to organise the move.  Hopefully I won't be too distracted playing with the TMX and get the house packed up or hubby might be a little cranky. :'(  Thanks again for all been so lovely.

Welcome Borneomum and good luck with all your planning and packing.

Years ago (about 1970) I typed up a book for a friend's husband who was one of the first people to study orang-utans in the wild.   It was fascinating stuff but I think things have changed a lot since then
