Mother's Day - what cookbook do you recommend?
« on: May 06, 2012, 01:52:14 pm »
I've had my TM for 18 months & have quite a few cookbooks :-)  My kids are looking at getting me a new TM cookbook for mothers day.  What would you recommend out of this list

- For Food's sake - Tenina
- Dinner Spinner - Tenina
- Quick Fix in the thermomix - Alyce Alexander
- A taste of Asia (Thermomix)

We eat a lot of Japanese food (I used to live in Japan and we changed our diet to be more Japanese after I read "Japanese women don't get old or fat", a really interesting read), so I'm always looking for easier ways to do Japanese cooking, but I'm after ideas more than anything (isn't that why we buy cookbooks most of the time??).  I have a daughter with food allergies (no gluten, dairy or sugar), but I'm used to substituting with most things, so it isn't a major problem.

So, I 'd be interested in what you all think, and what you would recommend.  Thank you

Cheers  :-))

To be honest, if you love Asian food especially Japanese, I love Bill Gramger's Everyday Asian book which I use a lot and I have adapted many of his recipes to be gluten free. I especially love his miso eggplant recipe! Otherwise, quick fix in the Thermomix is great for everyday quick and reliable recipes that the whole family can eat.

I'd go for any of the first 3 books -  Try and get them all in due course.  For Food's Sake has some wonderful flavour booster recipes which I particularly like eg caramelised garlic paste, flavoured butters & salts etc which all help make ordinary food taste so much better.

Dinner Spinner has great recipes, but it not a sturdy publication and I don't think it's suitable for a gift for Mother's Day really.  I hope Tenina and her publisher bring out a non-spinning version.  I'm on my third personal copy of it.

FFS and QFITT are more gifty.

Hi I Love My Thermomix. I don't think any of the cookbooks you mention really cater for a Japanese diet. The Asian cookbook is more focused on southeast Asian food. If you want a  good general Thermomix cookbook then quick fix or for food's sake are my favorites. Adam Liaw's book "two Asian kitchens' includes a lot of (non-Thermomix) Japanese recipes but if jou are already cooking Japanese food this may repeat what you're already doing. Good luck with your search!

Any of the first three books would be great. I agree that the dinner spinner book doesn't stand up to every day use. Several pages have torn off my copy.

I've just ordered For Foods Sake for my Mothers Day pressie mainly on the grounds that it has the flavour boosting recipes that JD has spoken about.  So looking forward to getting it.  ;D

I have the 4 you mentioned.

The 2 I use the most are QFITT & FFS

They both have great recipes  :)

Dinner Spinners is fine if you take out the little button and join the recipe cards with a split O-Ring as shown on this page if you scroll down to the 11th posting.

I only have the dinner spinner book and I wouldn't recommend it as a gift. I've all but given up on it becuase it falls apart everytime I use it and the pages have all come apart in my cupboard. I really should go and buy a ring to put on it like others have suggested but just haven't got around to it.

The first 3 are all great, but Alyce's book has a few more asian flavours and does tend to go towards gluten free.
