Too true Robyn. The prices in Coles at Smithfield have gone ballistic.

I thought that those 2 big supermarkets prices were the same Australia wide  :-))

No they vary the price, per suburb.
Also whether its a comp store or not.

(for example) if there is a IGA, coles and WW in one shopping centre, prices are cheaper.

We have  ww which is 25 minutes drive for me, and coles is 45 minutes drive, each way.
Thats why I buy as much direct  and in bulk as I can.

Rent is probably  the same. Houses probably a bit cheaper but a whole different style. Transport is expensive as is any distant city. Petrol is $1.56 today. Rego si more that NSW. House ins has gone through the roof. We are thinking about not having any.

Yesterday cauliflower was $5 and tomatoes $7 in Coles.

I'm loving this thread. i'm not participating but it's great hearing how everyone even small changes are making a big differences to the budgets. There is a thread on the taste forum at the moment where people are saying how much their weekly shop is and it's amazing how much some people spend on food. I'm thankful we have a lot of choice where I live and we are all relatively small eaters.

i am also enjoying this thread.
Although not actively participating, it has certainly made me think about my food shopping habits.
Although not overly extravagant when shopping, we never really have a budget as such, and i find we often pop in to get something and come out with lots of things for "just in case".
For quite a few weeks i have been trying to make my way through the freezer and pantry without buying too much else.

what this challenge has helped me do so far is attempt some meal planning to use whats in the freezer meat/chicken etc wise, and only buy milk/ fruit veg etc.

last week i spent just short of $100 at out local farmers market on f & v, milk, cream, cheese etc,. Most of this should do nearly two weeks, will just have to to up on milk.

So thanks for starting this

Week 2 of the challenge and I come in at $91.00.  Won't be going out tomorrow so this is it.

I'm also sticking to my meal plan.  Made Mac Cheese on Monday and there was enough for two nights. I had some sad looking veggies so they went in too.  It turned more into a pasta bake with veg and tuna.

Today I'm doing lamb shanks in the slow cook, didn't realise that there were 5 in the bag frozen together (not sure why an odd number, I'm sure the lambs had an even number of legs when they went to the butcher), so there is enough again for 2 nights.  So that's 2 meals I can transfer to next weeks meals.

Starting to think about meals for the next week, not only is this saving me money but I'm getting more inspired again with cooking.  Lost my cooking mojo for a while.  I try and add 1 or 2 new things to each week's meal plan.

Rego is very expensive for qld, roads are terrible.
Insurance is about $1000 for my house and contents, but my crime rate is zero.

But my views from my decks are wonderful.
Peaceful and quiet. Very safe for the kids.

Rent in about $370 for a 4 bedroom house per week. ( my friends pay that.)
Glad I built my house when I did, as prices have gone through the roof.

Too true Robyn. The prices in Coles at Smithfield have gone ballistic.  I am having a no spend week for sure. Only absolute necessities  and so far only $7.60 but it is only  Wed. I don't think I will go out of the house.

Gert

You've done really well Gert.

My son rents in Sydney and pays $250 for 1 bedroom granny flat. Rent out here on The Lake is much more reasonable because there is no transport or night life. $350 a week for a 3 bedroom home.

My daughter has a rental property in Cairns. 3 bedrooms  small block of land no pool. It rents for $365. A week. She just go the insurance bill for the house only no contents $1600.

My house backs on to a creek and rainforest . Noisy critters at night in the forest. But a safe area. 12 minutes from the airport and  15 from downtown Cairns which is not a safe area at all.
