Hmmm that's an easy one ....... heights.  I discovered my phobia the day we took our kids to Luna Park and they wanted to go on the ferris wheel.  Hubby had the two boys in one car and I had my 4 year old daughter in another.  All was fine till we got to the top and suddenly I looked down.  Was sure the darn thing was going to fall over, but couldn't show Miss 4 how terrified I was.

I was thinking, Ok, just hold on, the ride only goes for 2 minutes.  I can cope with that.  Well that was fine till it came time for people to get off.  The operator left us up the top while those in the cars below got off, then he turned the darn thing around and seemed to let everyone else off before us.  I was so scared I nearly threw up.  Since then, anything past the second step and I'm gone  :o

Spiders, insects, even snakes I have no problem with.  I was even sitting in the milking shed milking one of my goats, when a red bellied black snake poked it's head through the wall, not more than 4 feet away from me, slithered into the shed and out the door.  I didn't bat an eyelid, and just continued milking.  We were always taught that snakes don't really want to have anything to do with people, they'd rather just get away.  So if you don't bother them, they'll just move on.

But ask me to climb a ladder, and I'm a quivering mess.
Never ask a 2 year old to hold a tomato  :-)

Well, when it comes to heights, I am very affected - but only if what I am on is attached to or part of the ground.  My first notion of this fear was when I took the mule trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon back in the early '60s.  It's a long story, won't bore you with it here.
I have been up in a hot air balloon and that did not bother me all that much.  I have flown in small planes without going wobbly but have a intense fear of flying in large aircraft - I think it's being shut inside with so many other people.

Also can't go into a cave or underground - have an extreme phobia about underground garages.

I kill the occasional rattler here, snakes don't bother me all that much - I grew up in a place where we had rattlers, copperheads and cotton-mouth water moccasins, all poisonous and many non-poisonous.  There were several king snakes that lived in the various barns to keep the rat population in check.  They are friendly and we kids used to crawl up in the hay loft and lay quietly and after a while we would have the king snakes clustered around us.  They will kill poisonous snakes too.

How are you today, Cookie?  Has the worst of the storm passed over?  How is the bottle of port - any left??

Loved reading your stories girls - they would make a good book. So you are definitely packing a bottle of port for the retreat Cookie?

Unlike Andie, (I could never go do some of the things she has done), I prefer a big plane.  If I have to go down it would be nice to know I had company.  My Dad once told my Mum ' if the plane goes down, go down with dignity' - in other words don't you dare start screaming!!   I also threatened DD1 on a long trip to the States, if we are hijacked don't look at one of them.  With the looks she can give, she would have been shot instantly.

Loved your story Judy and yours Merrilyn.

Today is lovely and calm, although raining. The wind died down about 5.30pm yesterday. It blew up a bit in the night from the North West but was ok. It's only the NW winds I hate here as wind from any other direction drops down after a few hours. The NW wind comes in straight from the ocean. I took some photos at high tide yesterday and the wind had  blown the water up to the boardwalk here and of course brought heaps of sea weed with it.
Sunday is predicted to be another bad day so I hope they are wrong.
I have a little port left Judy. Hopefully I won't be needing it. The wind possibly wont worry me at Gracetown as it isn't my house to blow away, so maybe I'll be not too   bad. Still a nice bottle to share would be nice.

Did maddy actually say something when she posted that picture - I am avoiding it like the plague but would like to know what comments she made  ;D
