I think its wonderful to make a celebration out of starting school Rob. I wished I had thought of that, so I will have to remember for my grandkids.

It seems to work well here and they really do make a big thing out of it. At the end of Kindergarten there is a leaving do, during which the kids have their new school bags (which cost from 100-200€) and then they jump out the Window while the remaining kids sing a song (repeated for each leaving kid). It's considered some combination of escaping and being pushed out

And then yeah, 5-6 weeks later comes the big event, the beginning of school. Friends and family are there (in our case just family) and it's an event. You go to church with your school bag and your schuletüte (it's a cone filled with surprise gifts and sweets), then you carry both to school. Off to class for the first time and then it's a drink & cake and then most people go for a meal somewhere (or cook themselves) and then the kid gets to open her schultüte and discover the treats :)

As you can see its large and usually a bit heavy :)

The school bags are rather large too :)

The missus looking good, me looking about normal.

I'd post a photo of her jumping out the Window but it's gone out the photostream.

At 6 years old she was very happy to be starting. As to her name, either Ma-Rye-Ka or Ma-Rye-Kuh, not to be confused with Ma-Ree-Ka.

The ei sounds like eye (ei alone means egg, eier means eggs, and is also used to refer to men's testicles)
So how do you pronounce it?

I like Ma-Ree-Ka.  :D

I tend to use both pronunciations though I'm told it should be Ma-Rye-Kuh. I think my NI accent leads me to use both likewise I tend to use Tweny (Twenty) and Thirdy (Thirty). I was amused the other week when my daughter picked up on it and asked me about it. Something my son never has.

Hope DD had a great first day Rob

She did indeed, and the first Monday went well today. No idea about today yet as I'm at the dentist waiting for a crown, while my wife brings her home.

That is a wonderful thing Tarasis. Love it, kids being kids on a great adventure supported by their family.

We always made a big fuss of first days when I was head of school.  Mums Dads, grand parents and any significant others.  Morning tea for adults,  open class rooms and buddies all enjoying this special day.
T,  love the photos,  very special.  Love the missing tooth,  just at the right age.   ;D

Robyn, assuming hospital is for DH - hope it all goes well.

Deedub - what a shock, I bet you thought you were well past the bed wetting stage!! ;D

Maddy, fantastic news I'm sure you will do an amazing job. Make sure you cost it all properly so you don't end up working for nothing.

Tarasis, you daughter looks gorgeous. What a lovely tradition, we always make a fuss of first days but nothing as big as that. Lovely to see all her matching clothes and accessories and she looks so excited.

Tarasis, your daughter is absolutely adorable, thanks for sharing.  I love the idea of jumping out the kindy window - my boys would have loved something like that!

Maddy I can't believe you are only just now being asked to do cakes!

Nice to see a photo of your family Rob and hear what happens on the other side of the globe.  I just hope the kindy window isn't on the 1st floor or higher  ???

So i have to be down with him.  :-*

Farmed the kids out for tonight, so I can stay in Cairns, closer to him.

 hopefully will be all ok.
