Mab, put in one part vinegar to one part water (half fill the pan), bring the saucepan to the boil and then switch it off and leave it till tomorrow. You will find it will come off with a light going over with a scourer.

I burnt a saucepan and it was black (couldn't even see the bottom of the pan) and I thought a bin job and a friend told me about this and I thought ahh well nothing to lose ......... but was quite amazed how easily it cleaned !

Thanks for that Debbie. :)  Vinegar has so many uses but I didn't think of using it on a burnt saucepan.

Gert, I really must get some of those scrubbies and the little brushes.  I can see that they could be quite useful.
The  man who said it can't be done should not interupt the woman doing it.

BZB thanks for the info about the books, I'll keep an eye out for them.  I know what it's like trying to get them to put the Andy Griffiths books down ........ my son sneaks them to bed. Teachers think it's great but late nights not soooo great !

I used to read under the covers with a flashlight. When that was confiscated I used to read by holding the book up to the window and reading by streetlight or lay on the floor and try to use the light under the door. No wonder I have been wearing glasses since I was 14.

My eldest ds is the same as you were gert  ;D  after I thought I found all his torches the other night, I found another 2 this morning one literally under his mattress (must be his emergency torch  :-))) the other under his pillow  ;D he seems to not need much sleep never has, I spoke to his teacher at our last parent/teacher meeting and asked  if he is tired in class and she said no so I'm not too fussed better to be reading in bed than playing on his ipod I suppose

Housework and baking today child free  ;D

Suzanne I used to read all night too but had no trouble in any of the 13 schools I went to. Always had excellent grades, never felll asleep in class and think all the reading I did really paid off all my life. I say just keep feeding him MORE books. Amazing how many houses you see with no books at all. I always look for books, bookcases and Thermomix in the property section of newspapers and on line. Maybe he needs a Kindle with light! Or the new Paperwhite  Kindle..

No problem Mab, it works a treat !

Ohhh Gert, yes no wonder you needed glasses early. My DS has glasses now at 8 ....... and he has done the torch thing ! Tis great that I don't have to encourage him to read though !

Gert, Our ds's teacher was speaking to us last year about how everything flows on from reading ......... a really good reader will be a good speller, and good with language etc and our school follows a maths programme that is very language and mental based, so it has a flow on effect even in maths. A lot different to how we were taught, but interesting to see how it's progressing for them.

I agree. I know personally of several kids who don't know how to read even in high school. They cannot write a letter nor address an envelope. A very narrow world for kids who do not read in my opinion. And they will be no good at trivia contests in the future!

Hahaha. I guess we've all gone through the reading past bedtime thing, Suzanne and Gert.

Gert, I didn't know there are people who check for bookshelves in homes. I'd better clean up ours quick smart, in case my friends are like that too :)

Reading does so much for you.

We have arrived home safely and are now madly unpacking all out stuff. Hopefully I will get on here later this evening. I may fall asleep as we were woken at some very early hour by the cray boats loading and leaving Denison.

Thanks for sharing my holiday everyone. The next one is in nearly two months when we go 'camping' to Birdsville.
