Ghastly for you. I'm in WA , so there a few jobs around. Although I believe some of the geologist jobs for Fortescue metal have disappeared.

Ok Gert and obbie - you may see me there in the coming months *grin* - I'll let you know.  Yes cookie - the geologist job market isn't as bad at the 1998-2000 years but it certainly has been better.

Mining professionals in Australia are some of the best paid in the world and I think that the industry is starting to shed some positions due to slowing down and to save some pennies.  The number of projects/expansions that have been mothballed in the past 12 months is larger than normal.  We shall see what happens.

Good luck with your job search Fiona having a lot of notice helps a little bit. This happened to DH last year he found out in the November 2011 that his contract would end in March 2012 after 22 years. Luckily he found a job to start straight away with less money so we had to make a lot of allowances and cut backs DS had to change schools and we cut back on a lot of things. It is amazing what you can cut back on when you have to

Good luck with the hunting dragonfly. There are a lot of cuts going on in mining at the moment with most of the big miners needing to cut staff significantly over the next few months. We will also see more roles being cut once the slow down of capital project hitting a bit harder in the new year. Depending on what area of geology work you have experience in, and if you are interested in off shore and FIFO work there's still a lot around. In particular there is a lot in the oil and gas industry that is well paid but you do need to be prepared for conditions or roster arrangements that aren't as good as you may have had in the past, or in locations that are less than ideal for many. I would suggest you start sending emails to anyone you have worked with in the past or contacts that you may have met at training or workshops you've attended, even if you have met them only briefly. The majority of work for experienced workers tends to come through word of mouth or introductions rather than advertised roles. Also if you have any training that needs updating, particularly if you are thinking of giving off shore work a go, try and get this completed before leaving your current role.

Thank you all again for your support - makes me feel better *grin*

Wonder - you're quite right about jobs being word of mouth or actually not be advertised - I have a plan *grin*.  I figure I can email the recruitment agent that got me this job *grin*.

Anyway thanks for the ideas - I am hunting now.

I've had the chance to chat with the general manager about any further job opportunities.  Nothing available at the moment - but that's ok.  I have sent out my CV to a lot of people and places and I shall see what happens.

The GM offered to let me go at the end of the year (my work visa is due for renewal - in many ways it would be easier to go sooner rather than later).  I am so looking forward to having some time off.  Very very excited.  I'm hoping to be home before Christmas - but we shall see how what happens *grin*.  Being able to spend some time with my family and friends in Melbourne for longer than a 2 to 3 week period is going to be awesome!  Maybe I can catch up with some forum members at some stage  ;D

So thank you all again for the wonderful support and great comments that were made - much appreciated.

Cheers

Things are sounding positive, so good luck with everything.

There are quite a few forum members in and around Melbourne now so if you start up a thread with possible meeting dates and options I am sure lots of us will respond.
